From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:0.9.7) Gecko/20011221 BuildID: 2001122106 Just as MS Outlook can do it would be quite nice if one can specify a custom sound file played when a certain message arrives. I think a new action in the message filter window would be the best solution for it. This sound file should override the global "new mail" sound then.

I think there may be an existing bug report for this request... will look
Maybe Laurel was thinking of bug 25183 (or bug 11040). I suggest making sure it is also possible to have NO sound as an option on a filter (or folder). Many people would prefer not to be interrupted for many messages (e.g., those from high traffic mailing lists).

I too would like the option to play *no* sound if something is filtered. It gets ridiculous when my receive sound goes off every minute for spam and filtered mailing lists. Related, it also would be nice to make the mail notification icon for Windoze selectable. I would be happy if, at minimum, one could just turn-off sound and icon for filtered items. -Noel
Is this one being worked on at all? It seems like it should be!

The mail notification is totally useless. Please get on with this feature.
I think the "play no sound" thing would be part of bug 11040 (which is to allow filters to control the overall notification). I think for a filter initiated "specific" custom sound to be effective, it would have to play once for each message filtered (or at least once per filter triggered) and not change the final "new mail has arrived" sound. Otherwise, if I have custom sounds defined for 3 different types of mail, and I get one of each of those three in the same mail run, which sound plays? Prefered answer: all of them. :) Clearing the OS/Platform, because I want this on Mac OS X, too :)

To avoid the trouble when several rules would fire on a message, you could add a "stop processing more filters" feature, (like Outlook). So if you want the standard mail notification as well, just let it continue, otherwise check "stop processing more rules" and be done with it. It could also act as a "Don't play sound" feature.

Mail from Apple does it like that. When a bunch of new messages arrives, and play sound is an action for some of them (but not for all and it's a different sound for different messages), it will just play the sound for the first mail that matched the appropriate rule and then not play any other sounds for this bunch of mails. That way they avoid having the app playing 20 times a sound if 20 mails arrive and users know, they must add sound filters for important mails on top and before sound played for less important mails, so always the most important sound is played.

This feature would really be great. I sometimes receive alert emails from a server monitoring application, but i often miss them. Label those mails automatically is not enough, as i'm not always watching my inbox.
Ping. There should be other notify options like "Pop up a window", as well. This should not simply be left to external programs, very few of which have conditional functionality. Such conditional notifications are a basic feature of a modern mail client.
sorry for the spam. making bugzilla reflect reality as I'm not working on these bugs. filter on FOOBARCHEESE to remove these in bulk.

Any action on this bug? Even something simple like adding "Only for Inbox" to "Play a sound" would answer most of the duplicate bugs mentioned here. Seems like most refer to not wanting to have the alert sound for high traffic mail lists. This is my very problem also, I don't want to hear alerts for cvs commit messages.
