The Learn More link needs to be rewritten to include the consolidated permission for Push and Web Notifications landing in Fx 44. When prompted for Push notifications, the user now grants permission to receive push notifications in background and to show notifications to the user.

+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #1169038 +++

FF needs a landing page for Push Notification background and explanation and is coded to have it be:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/push/

The content for this page has been written and edited and is here:

This doc has been updated to reflect management and permissions UI.

Looks good. Thanks.

When I go to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/push/, all of the sections are collapsed. The geolocation Learn More link has a similar set up, except it has a summary sentence at the top explaining what this is.
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/geolocation/

I think we should do something similar or unhide the "What is push" section.
How about adding this at the top:

Websites you use with Firefox can send you notifications that can appear on screen or update the web page. You can control how these notifications appear and work.

I updated this slightly and added it to the google doc.

Can we get this change and the "What's new" added to www.mozilla.org before Tuesday?

Hi Jennifer,
Who has access to edit
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/push/ ? We need to update the content there today or Monday before Tuesday's release. Thanks!

Hi-

This is super last minute for our team - we have a ton of other WIP for Tuesday. I'll NI our project managers and ping them in our #www IRC channel - Mike Alexis and Cory Price - and see what they can do for you.

Can you code the changes on Bedrock and submit a pull request in Github for code review?

That would help this get done more quickly.

Thx,
Jen

A few things

1. What is the urgency of this request, and risk of it does not land on Tuesday? As noted above, we are loaded to the max with updates for the November moment in time.

2. This page is localized. Anything we do in the immediate will be en-US only.

3. It's unclear the specific changes to the page from the Google Document. If it's just an intro string, and a new section and no other changes, please specify explicitly what the intro string is, and what the new section/strings should be.

Thanks.
Hi Cory! Thanks for jumping in on this! There are some changes with Firefox 44 notifications that have security considerations that users should be aware of. Hence, we need to add these two things to the mozilla.org page:

1. This is the Intro before the Frequently asked questions:
Websites you use with Firefox can send you notifications in the background that can appear on screen or update the web page. You can control how these notifications appear and work.

2. The What's New section:

What’s New?
Firefox has delivered on-screen notifications to open web pages for the last several releases. With Firefox 44, users can receive notifications associated with a web page even if they navigate away from the site or close the tab via a mechanism called Push. With Push, sites can update data in the background even without showing you a notification. If you already gave permission to a site to send notifications, these sites will also be able to use this Push
mechanism. If you wish to change notifications preferences, navigate to Firefox>Preferences>Content>Notifications or click the options in one of the notifications you receive.

Bill - there is no way to link directly to What's New or to have the section opened by default instead of closed by default. Or at least it would be difficult to get that working at the last minute. Can we move "What's New" under "What is Push?"?
Flags: needinfo?(wmaggs)
Thanks :tanvi - I will discuss this with the team. We do need final specifications (e.g. location of the section) by EOD today. Please ping me when they arrive.

Bill,

The other option is to redirect to the sumo page instead of making these text changes. If we can get the Learn More link working by Monday, it may be better to just ask for that instead of the text changes here. Particularly because the "What's New" section is hidden on this site and would be visible on sumo.
As Cory said, this page is localized. And not just that: we've been "pushing" this page as part of the Fall Campaign material. So redirecting it, or making updates last minute is going to be frustrating for our volunteers.

If you need to update content, I'd suggest to do it once and for good, and with a better schedule. Also note that doing minor changes like "the site" -> "it" is going to have disruptive effects on localized versions. We basically need to redo the page from scratch.

To be honest I'm not completely sure why this page is not on SUMO, I would expect less version-specific content hosted on mozilla.org.
If someone can make *absolutely clear* what the required edits are and detail them here in the bug, I can see if I can pick these changes up in time for a Tuesday push.

As Flod mentions this page is already localized, so please keep edits to a bare minimum of what is required in order to make the information accurate. We should be saying no to minor changes like "the site" -> "it".

Also I raised this the first time we put this page together, but the copy doc is a jumbled mess of edits and discussion (again), which makes it both time consuming and confusing for a developer to pick through. Ideally having the new strings ready to copy/paste here in the bug would be ideal, especially given the short notice this time around.

Here are the changes:

In Section called:

To stop a site from sending you push messages:
Replace

1. In the URL bar, type about:permissions.

with

1. Navigate to Preferences/Options and select Choose...

Replace

3. Set Receive Push Notifications to Always Ask.

with

3. Select Remove Site

In Section called:

How do I disable Push permanently?

Replace:

1.In the URL bar, type about:permissions.

with

1. Navigate to Preferences/Options and select Choose...

Replace

3. Set the Receive Push Notifications to Block. Websites will not be able to send you messages or ask for access to Push.

with

3. Websites will not be able to send you messages and will need to ask your permission to send them in the future.

< 1. Navigate to Preferences/Options and select Choose...

This sentence is confusing since the directions are too vague. To find this button I had to follow these steps:

1.) Navigate to Preferences/Options
2.) Click on Content
3.) Under Notifications, select Choose...

Should I reword it to this effect?
Flags: needinfo?(wmaggs)
Under the section called "How do I disable Push permanently?"

do we also need to update this text?

Replace:

Select 'All Sites'.

with:

Select 'Remove All Sites'

Yes.

This was my experience as well.

We have to move right now on this one, so I'm going to say let's move with this line:

1. Navigate to Preferences/Options, click on Content and select Choose

It can be changed later on if it needs to.
In reply to Alex Gibson [:agibson] from comment #22)
> What about comment 16?

I changed this again. My changes seem to keep colliding. Here are the changes needed in the FAQ:

How do I revoke Push permissions?

To stop a site from sending you push messages:

    Navigate to Preferences>Content or Options>Content
    Under Notifications select Choose....
Highlight site to be removed and select Remove Site

How do I disable Push?

Push is always opt-in in Firefox. A site cannot send you push messages without your permission. If you wish to disable the feature completely, please follow these steps:

    Navigate to Preferences>Content or Options>Content
    Under Notifications select Choose....
    select Remove All Sites

Note that the title "How do I disable Push?" changed. It no longer says permanently.

Tanvi - in Bill's comments, he does not mention the additions in comment 9. Just confirming that we do NOT need the items in comment 9, or that Bill's comments were IN ADDITION to comment 9.
> Navigate to Preferences>Content or Options>Content

This isn't a full sentence and will likely not translate well.

I suggest we use:

1. Navigate to Preferences/Options
2. Click on Content and select Choose

Ok, please change for both entries above.
Yes, please also add the part in comment 9:

1. This is the Intro before the Frequently asked questions:
Websites you use with Firefox can send you notifications in the background that can appear on screen or update the web page. You can control how these notifications appear and work.

2. Please add the "What's New" section after the "How do I disable Push permanently?" section and before the "Will this cost me money?" section:
What’s New?
Firefox has delivered on-screen notifications to open web pages for the last several releases. With Firefox 44, users can receive notifications associated with a web page even if they navigate away from the site or close the tab via a mechanism called Push. mechanism. If you wish to change notifications preferences, navigate to Firefox>Preferences>Content>Notifications or click the options in one of the notifications you receive.
