Daniel,
Does it happen with thunderbird started in safe mode?
What changed on your system before this started happening?
How long have you been on sierra 10.12?

Wayne, unified folder misbehaving is an ancient old problem on all platforms, especially rows blanking out as the mouse passes over it.
I had that happen in my inbox for a while until I fixed it by removing the "smart mailboxes" from my profile.
So reporter, remove "smart mailboxes" from your mail storage and then configure the unified trash again.

We had two reports of this lately. In bug 1342110 comment #3 I instructed a user to remove "smart mailboxes" and that helped. In bug 1342515 I suggested the same, but the reporter claimed that it didn't work. However, personally I've always been able to fix unified views by removing "smart mailboxes".
