User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:0.9.8) Gecko/20020204
BuildID: 2002020406

when opening mailer the sidebar is not displayed even if there is a tick on
"Sidebar" menu (besides the siddebar buttom, which is used for hiding or showing
sidebar, is dissplayed at the bottom of the page, but it doesn't work). But if
I take off and put on the tick again (or press F9 for two times) the sidebar
appear and the buttom at the bottom works right now.
If I close mailer and open it again the sidebar is not displayed again
The same bug appear in newest nightly builds

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.from menu 'Tasks' open 'Mail&Newsgroups'
2.in 'View' see that tick is on 'Sidebar', but sidebar isn't displayed in the page.
3.take of tick from 'Sidebar' in "view' menu and put it again to 'Sidebar'.
4.now see that the sidebar appeared, and the buttom at the bottom works right.
5.close mailer and open it again, the sidebar is not dissplayed :(

Actual Results: the sidebar is not dissplayed when opening Mailer even if there
is tick on "sidebar" menu

Expected Results: Sidebar has to be dissplayed when opening Mailer
This bug really exists. Please fix it before Mozilla 1.0 is out.

I am looking for "the siddebar buttom, which is used for hiding or showing
sidebar, is dissplayed at the bottom of the page" - what do you mean? - 'x' on
the sidebar?
'Tick' means check mark on the menu items, right? Is it April or February build?
I'm attaching a printscreen of so called "sidebar button"

Yes, 'tick' means check mark on the menu items.

I'm using 20020204 build, guess it is february build.

Sorry for not very exact expresions.
Hope this will clear what I meant as a sidebar button.
I have cheked it with newest nightly builds this bug exists there too
I really think that fixing this bug before 1.0 would be very useful. For the
begginers meet lots of problems when they want to use address bug in Mizilla
mailer. Fixing this bug would ease the usage of it.
Keywords: mozilla1.0
This bug exists in Mozilla 1.0 release candidate 2. I want to repeat one more
time, that correcting this bug before version 1.0 would ease very much usage of
the mailer for the biginers and not just beginers.
Shouldn't this bug receive a higher priority as it seriously hinders the use of
mail? Joe Shmoe loves to have his address book readily available and
functional. He also hates searching through menus trying to get the thing to
show up.

This bug at least needs a milestone of some kind.

I can confirm this bug on RC2 with XP, and RC2 with Linux.

My most hated bug as I use Moz/NS because of the great mail!!
This bug exist on Mozilla RC3 too :(

Mozilla developers, please fix this bug before 1.0
This bug still exist on Mozilla 1.0.1 RC1 :(

This is very annoying bug and shoud be fixed in mozilla 1.0.1 final version.

Please.
Bug still not fixed in Mozilla 1.0.1 RC1 and Mozilla 1.1 20020818.

The sidebar works correctly with an old profile (created with Mozilla 0.9.8
lt-LT localized instaler), but when new profile is created this bug appeares.
Keywords: mozilla1.0mozilla1.0.1
Possible dupes: bug 144813 and bug 165619.
I have an explanation and easy fix for this and 168998, 164150, 159214, 147832
etc. etc.

SidebarShowHide in sidebarOverlay.js includes a fix for old profiles before
sidebar_overlay_init is called.

When a browser or mail window is first started sidebar_overlay_init is called
without this 'old profile fix' - pressing F9 twice calls SidebarShowHide (twise)
with its associated fix which is why the sidebar then appears.

If this short block of code is moved from SidebarShowHide() into
sidebar_overlay_init() then the problems all go away (true for 1.0.x and trunk)

I have never checked in any code so must rely on someone else to do this.
Geraint: if you have made this change in your system, can you create a patch and
attach it to this bug?
This is my first patch - I hope it is the correct format.
*** Bug 144813 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I don't even see an option for the MailNews Sidebar in FizzillaMach/2003021203,
I think it has been removed entirely. Anyone still see it?
Summary: Mozilla mailer sidebar doesn't appear → Mozilla MailNews Sidebar doesn't appear
Yes, sidebar from MailNews has been removed entirely :(
I think Mozilla Mail developers don't use Mozilla MailNews client and because of
this Mozilla Mail is not so user-friendly :(
It seems some Mozilla developers don't want to hear users opinion :(

see bug #178003
Resolving Invalid since there isn't a MailNews Sidebar any longer.

Why Sidebar is removed ? Lot of people uses sidebar (see comments on bug
#178003) an I think mozilla developers should hear users opinion.

Why Mozilla developers close this bug as Invalid ? I think this bug should be
reopened.
A lot of people like sidebar on Mozilla MailNews (see comments on bug
#178003).

I'm reopening this bug.

we've discussed it, and the module owners (mscott, bienvenu, sspitzer) and the
UI lead (jglick) all agree: no sidebar in mail or addressbook. definitely not
the compose window.

we do plan on adding a contacts pane to the 3 pane, like Outlook Express has.
