From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC; de-AT; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020529 BuildID: 2002052917 Sometimes, when mozilla runs, the system stops the type-input. i can't type in other applications neither in mozilla anymore. sometimes, the stuff that i type in other applications appears in the browsers selected input field. It helps (most times), to open just a context-menue in mozilla. the i am able to type again. if that doesn't work out, i have to quit mozilla. after that - all of a sudden - i am able to type again. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1.open mozilla 2.browse a bit 3.switch to another application 4.try to type.. Actual Results: i am unable to type text with my keyboard Expected Results: show the typed text in mozilla and in other applications it is very very annoying. i though about moving to another browser (icab + sherlock2), because this s****...

This bugs severity should be raised. I have to shut down Mozilla if I want to use another program.
Please give an exact series of steps to reproduce this bug, if you can. At least give more details about the type of machine you are using, the web sites you visit, and what other applications you have running.
Using Moz 1.1a on Mac OS 9, steps to reproduce: 1. Start Mozilla 2. Load any page. 3. Minimize window. 4. Switch to "Finder". 5. Press Apple + F to launch Sherlock 2. 6. Try to type something in Sherlock 2. ´ Does not need to be Sherlock, just start IE 5 for example and its impossible to write anything in the URL bar.

Focus issue?
Assignee: sgehani → bryner
Sounds like a popup (menus? autocomplete?) issue to me -- such as a popup staying open when focus is moved off of the Mozilla window, and that popup grabbing the keyboard input (not sure what correct terminology is on Mac).
Keywords: mozilla1.1
Severity: normal → major
Other steps to reproduce: 1: go into the adress-field of mozilla 2: type in a few letters 3: wenn the search-engines search field pops down under the adress-line, select it with the down-button (don't press enter) 4: switch to another application (for example simple text) 5: press <apple>+<N> 6: a new mozilla-window opens in the backgroung even while in another program runs (so in the example, no simple-text window opens, like it should be.). the popups seem to close visually, but probably not internal..
José Jeria has asked if this is a duplicate of bug 108653 I'm the reporter of bug 108653 I must say that I find this to be _very_ similiar to bug 108653. But I do have questions regarding this: In my tracking down of issues, I only observed this kind of behaviour if some extension, application, etc. was active that does a 'hide front application before switch' - in my case either of (bug 112258): -- Dragthing -- Quit CSM So : 1) do you have either of these (or something similar) installed with 'hide front application before switch' activated 2) does the workaround as described in bug 108653#c6 work for you
No, the workaround in bug 108653 comment 6 does not fix this problem at all. Neither do I have this programs that you mention installed. Guess its not a dupe then.

This still happends, noticed now that it only happends if you minimize Mozilla. If you just switch to Finder everything is Ok.
Adding keyword dataloss, reason for this: When i switch to Sherlock I cannot type into it, so I press Apple + Q to exit Sherlock, But, focus is in Mozilla, so Mozilla shuts down instead.

It's been suggested that this issue is caused by 3rd party software, such as: DragThing (ver 4.2 tested) Quit CSM (ver 2.2 tested) that affect application switching behaviour. Do those who can reproduce this have any such software installed? If no, please test after disabling non-Apple extensions, and make sure no software other than the test apps is running at the time. I cannot reproduce this, and suspect that it's caused by interactions with other software.
I have neither of those programs and can easily reproduce this as I mentioned in comment 4.
If you reboot with apple-only extensions, can you still reproduce it? Is there anything else unusual about your OS? Is it US-english, or another localization?
I have International English Mac OS 9.2.2. I don't have the extensions mentioned in #8 and #14. The same thing happens in Netscape 7.0. Ideally you should ask for a Apple System Profiler document from people who have this problem so that you can look for common extensions or apps.
Mozilla or Netscape 7 does not even work when loading with any extensions (pressed shift when rebooting). I get the error message about "ContextualMenu" not found. Sorry if I misunderstood, I am not so familiar with Mac.

the bug is also easy to reproduce, when you surf a while and want to go back a few sites at once. usually you press the small triangle-button under the back-button (in the modern theme). the history pops up pretty slow, if you klick something the browser points well to the desired page and the history-pulldown disappears - but not really, because it stays open in the background - 'flying'. you have to click it a second time to make it really disappear. while the pulldown is still open in the background, you are unable to type. may this bug be connected with slower processor speed? my machine isn't that speedy, interface-redraw takes time.. right now, i encountered this bug also in mozilla 1.0.1! superannoying one, if you aks me..
Is this bug always associated with a popup menu that has been left up in the background? José? Windowshading the browser window is a good way to see these.
Simon, dont know if I really understand you. But when i windowsshade Mozilla I dont see anything else. Only the faded Mozilla. The steps to reproduce that i mention in comment 4 are steps that I do directly without loading any other program or extensions.

By the definitions on <http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/bug_status.html#severity> and <http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?format=guided>, crashing and dataloss bugs are of critical or possibly higher severity. Only changing open bugs to minimize unnecessary spam. Keywords to trigger this would be crash, topcrash, topcrash+, zt4newcrash, dataloss.

i'm revoking dataloss, the fact that mozilla doesn't confirm quiting is addressed in some other bugs. I am aware that this is a major problem for people but I'm trying to keep the db clean.

It seems like this only affects mac classic for which Mozilla is no longer developed -> Wontfix
