CC derives from email, but the usage on the web confuses people, younger generations in particular, who depend less and less on email. It should be renamed to subscribers, watchers or followers. Given that we already have the Follow button on modal bug UI, the last option might be the best.

I’m changing my opinion: “follow” sounds more like “follow (someone)” than “follow (something)”, mostly thanks to Twitter. I would suggest using Subscribers and changing the “Follow”/“Stop Following” button label to “Subscribe”/“Unsubscribe” just like GitHub. GItHub also uses “Watch”/“Unwatch” for repositories, that match our Component Watching terms.

Are we talking about just changing the user facing parts of CC, not updating the database as well? Or both? Seems like just changing the templates and the name in the fielddefs table should be sufficient.

No DB changes. Just the UI for now, and the API will follow probably when migrating to REST API v2 or GraphQL API v1.

Also, CC is technically wrong, because email notifications are personal, and the user’s email address is added to To, not Cc nor Bcc.

I have realized Phabricator uses the term Subscribers so we can offer kinda unified experience if we do this. Actually for the same reason, Bugzilla’s avatars are square, not circle, to match Phabricator, GitHub and Slack which are all actively used in Mozilla.

As per the PR, we won't be making this change.
