User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:69.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/69.0

Steps to reproduce:

Settings:
Einstellungen -> Ansicht -> Nachrichtenfenster/-tab beim Verschieben oder Löschen schließen [box ticked]
Open an email in a window. Click on the "delete" button. Delete button vanishes, but email window stays open contrary to the setting "close message window when deleted".

Actual results:

This applies only to emails received with Thunderbird after the 68.* update.
The windows of older emails received with Thunderbird < 68 are closed when deleted.

Expected results:

The email window should be closed when deleted.

I can't reproduce that. With that "Close message window/tab on move or delete" selected, I opened a message in a new window and hit the Delete button. Result, window closed, message deleted.

This function was broken for a long time, but we fixed it in bug 1518823.

New observation:
If there is only one email in the inbox/Posteingang then its window is closed when deleted.
If there are more than one emails in the inbox then all other email windows but the last one are not closed when deleted.
When only one is left: see above.
I hope this is not some strange behaviour of my local installation.

OK, I set the option to open messages in a new message window. I opened three messages in stand-alone windows. I clicked onto the trash icon in all three messages. As expected, the respective windows closed as the icon was clicked and the message went to the trash. That was on a local folder as inbox. I repeated with two messages from an IMAP mailbox, the result was the same.

Do you use any add-ons?

No add-ons, its pure Thunderbird.
One thing about the inbox: It's a grouped inbox fed by an IMAP mailbox and by an smtp-mailbox.
I have to specify what I said above: It seems that the delete -> close window mechanism works ok with all emails in local folders irrespective of their date, i.e. received before and after the Thunderbird 68 update.

You mean unified inbox? Uff, that's when the trouble starts. I'd have to set up something like that for a test.

OK, let's clear this NI finally.

I've set up a unified inbox with one POP3 account and one IMAP account. Configured to open messages in a new message window, with closing the window on delete.

Opened an IMAP message from the unified inbox, clicked delete. Window gone, message ended up in the trash. Repeated with a message from the POP3 inbox. Also closed the window and ended up in the corresponding trash.

So far I can't see the problem, sorry. Have you tried deleting your "smart mailboxes" folder?
