Is this the View > Folders > Unified view?
I'm not able to reproduce this using 76.0b1 on Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS.
Will test on Windows when time permits.

Taken after starting up Thunderbird. Inbox is expanded instead of being collapsed.
Settings: Ansicht - Ordner - Gruppiert (View - Folders - Grouped)

I'm still not able to reproduce this using 68.7.0, 76.0b1 or 77.0a1 on Windows 10.
Set View > Folders > Unified.
Collapsed the Unified Inbox.
Quit and restarted them all several times and the Inbox remained collapsed.
Have you tried safe mode using Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled?

Disabling the addons does not help

Disabling the addons does not help
Okay, thanks.
The only other thing I notice about your setup and mine is that you have folders and sub-folders under Local Folders (Lokale Ordner) and I don't.
Not sure if that is relevant or not.

Disabling the addons does not help
I was finally able to reproduce this by disabling "When Thunderbird launches, show the Start Page in the message area."
Helmut, do you have that option disabled?
Appears to be caused by bug 1620310

You are right, I have this option disabled. Enabling it shows collapsed groupd inbox

Because this bug's Severity has not been changed from the default since it was filed, and it's Priority is --
(non,) indicating it has has not been previously triaged, the bug's Severity is being updated to --
(default, untriaged.)

Thanks for finding the regression

The idea behind bug 1620310 is to select an email at startup when that option is disabled, so yes it expands the related folder path as a consequence. It's a behaviour change so yes it has some consequences but that one must be expected, we can't select something on one side but not display it on the other, for consistency. It behaves as if that email was selected by hand, and at that time the folder it belongs to would also be expanded.

John, also related ? Bug 1636350 - Unchecking Option for Start Page prevents Folder Pane state being restored

Yes, looks definitely very similar and related to me. Also, workaround mentioned there sounds clever. :)

Seems like we need a UX assessment for this, bug 1629522 and bug 1636350, especially given that bug 1620310 was landed without UX input (although it may have been a technically sound change).
I'm also clearing the S4 severity setting I had made, because I'm not a good judge of this (I just don't care), because I know users can get very unhappy about changes or bugs with folder/account open/close state on startup.

Sorry it took me so long to answer to this NI.
As a general approach, we shouldn't change a previous state set by the user.
So if the user has collapsed folders, we shouldn't deliberately decide to select an element if an option in the settings doesn't specifically say so.
"Don't show start page" != "Auto select first message".
Is it possible to focus on the Thread Pane without selecting any message?
In this way the message pane remains blank, as the user wants, and without selecting any message we don't cause the collapsed parent folder to open.

Note, in bug 1629522 we are backing out bug 1620310.
We are enabling 68->78 updates in the next week. What is the next step?

Should be resolved now in Thunderbird 78.2.2 with bug 1629522.
