I am using Mozilla on a laptop running Windows XP. The laptop has both a modem
and an ethernet connection to my cable modem. Ever since I installed SP1 about
3 days ago, Mozilla causes the auto-dial dialog to come up whenever it cannot
contact a host due to a bad URL, the host being down or just slow, or whatever.
The problem is that I am getting this dialog even though I am connect directly
by ethernet to my broadband connection. In the Internet Properties control
panel applet, I have set "Dial whenever a network connection is not present"
under "Dial-up ... settings". Under LAN settings, I have "Automatically detect
settings" checked.
To reproduce:
1) Enter an nonexistent URL into the Location bar (or whatever that edit
control-like thing at the top of the browser window is). I used www.ggggggggg.com.
2) Mozilla spins for a while.
3) Auto-dial dialog comes up. Cancel the dialog.
4) Get the Mozilla message "The connection was refused when attempting to
contact <blah>."
Since I am directly connected to the Internet through the ethenet connection, I
would never expect to get the auto-dial dialog. Indeed, if I try the same thing
using IE6, I do not get the dialog. IE6 goes straight to telling it could not
find the URL.
Tested with Mozilla trunk 2002-09-18-08 on Windows XP SP1.
Summary: Mozilla tries to auto-dial even though I have an ethernet connection → Conn: tries to auto-dial even though I have an ethernet connection

Reporter: can you reproduce this in a recent nightly? There is a setting now for
auto-dial. Make sure it's off.

a workaround is lister here:
http://www.mozilla.org/quality/networking/docs/autodial.html
type about:config in address bar and...
"Users can bypass the feature altogether by setting the pref
network.autodial-helper.enabled to false."

Since we still get dupes on this, I guess I should ask:
Should we change the default value of the pref back?

Whats just amazed me is that I browsed a URL that required authentication, it
asked me for authentication as expected and then threw the redial error 797!

This affects people on dialup also, I'm on dialup and it always ask me to dial even though im dialed up, happens on any web page, this doesn't do this in firefox 3.0 but it does do this on the latest firefox 3.1 nightlies i think since b2pre, so now i have to disable the pref and then firefox don't ask me to dial up when im NOT online. That makes me have to do several more steps to get online, if this was fixed then i could simply launch firefox then click dial when firefox brings up the dialog, Should this be a separate bug?

No Derek, I've probably already done this for you. :)
See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=169841 .
Oddly enough, this bug report is a whopping 6 (!) years old ...

Yup, 6 years old, yet it still pops up. I hit it in 3.0 just a couple of days ago and I discovered that the fix, to turn off the autodial config entry, was for some reason not set in this version. After resetting that variable, I haven't seen the bug since. But I am truly amazed this bug could live on this many years.
