Not sure if its the same issue as on bug 1749790, but opening this so Kinetic can take a look at it. please feel free to close it if you think its the same issue.

Affected
Im using a macbook with MacOS 11.
Firefox release 96.0.1 Not affected
Firefox Beta 97.0b2 affected
Firefox Nightly 98.0a1 affected

Steps to reproduce

  1. go to https://soundcloud.com/yeonkkot/sets/s12
  2. Issue is clear using speakers but you can put headphones if you want
  3. click on the image on track#28 Stephen onprachanh and hear it for about 15seconds

actual results
It will give a crackling/static noice for half a second, mostly after you press the play button. The crackling noise repeats randomly. I get it most of the times, just a few times I don´t get it,so i refresh the page and play again the song and i get it, the crackling is also random in the way that after i hit play i hear it once, or twice (one after another) and repeat in the future. I used that song as example since its calm for some seconds but i can still hear it on most of songs from that site. if i hit play on the first song, then wait 5 seconds, hit play on the second song and so on.

expected results
The sould should be crystal clear. as it does on firefox release.

note: you can also use this song to test the bug:

track#27

Pablo, can you please attach a copy of about:support from the machine this occurs on?

If you could also perform an experiment by setting the prefs media.cubeb.sandbox_v2 and media.cubeb.sandbox to false, restarting Firefox and verifying the issue is not longer present that'd be useful, thank you.

Hi matthew , turning media.cubeb.sandbox_v2 and media.cubeb.sandbox works , since when i hit play i can´t hear the crackling, most of the time the noise appears right away.

here is the attachment of about:Config

This happens to me as well while playing Spotify or Apple Music (using the native apps) and setting media.cubeb.sandbox=falsesounds like fixed it. Feel free to ping me on slack if you need a config dump or other data.

I am also hearing a crackling noise when testing with latest beta after i press the button to join a web conference, for 1 second and then it stops using Webex https://cart.webex.com/sign-up-webex)

Let me know if you need a separate bug for webex.
regards

Just to clarify - in this case you're experiencing crackling in other audio-producing apps while Firefox is running?

Thanks for letting me know. There's bug 1749790 for crackling during video calls, but it's likely to be the same root cause as this issue.

Yes. While Firefox is running and with the two prefs set to true, I hear a crackling sound during music playing in the native apps of Spotify or Apple Music.

The regressing feature was disabled in 97.0b7.

There's an experimental build available at https://firefox-ci-tc.services.mozilla.com/api/queue/v1/task/TUMtc6EsSh-QJn-1IaIJLQ/runs/0/artifacts/public/build/target.dmg that improves the situation significantly for me. I'd love to get feedback on whether that build improves the situation for anyone seeing this issue.

Hi @kinetic

yea with that try build it is way better on my machine, i can´t hear the crackling noise that i was getting a few seconds after i hit the play button

Webcompat Priority: --- → ?

The feature in question is disabled, so we currently don't see any WebCompat breakage.
