"Close message window/tab on move or delete" does not seem to work with `Threaded` (but works in troubleshoot mode, or `Unthreaded`). May involve `Unified folders`

Steps to reproduce:
I am running TB 102.2.0 64bit on Win10. Prior to this version, whenever Ideleted an open message, the tab in which it was displayed closed. Now, when I delete an open message, it just sits there. I went into Preferences > Display > Advanced and noted that the check box "Close message window/tab on move or delete" was checked. The setting seems to be ignored. I query for this issue and I saw someone had this problem in version TB 66.0b2 back in 2019. This bug is also in TB 102.2.0 64 bit running on my Macbook on MacOS 12.5.1.
Thanks
Actual results:
The deleted message window stays open and visible.
Expected results:
The deleted message window should close automatically.

I have not tried Troubeshoot mode. This is happening on two win 10 computers and a new Macbook. All this started on update to TB 102.2.0.

Just found out that if I change View->Sort by--> Unthreaded This fixes the bug!

Was Googling trying to solve this very problem and found this thread. Can confirm it is an issue on Windows and that changing to View -> Sort by -> Unthreaded is solves it. Perhaps the Threaded view has always had this behavior, and the fact that 102 turns on the Threaded view for me made this appear as if it was new behavior?

Same here. I upgraded to 102 and it must have changed my View to Threaded and I did not change it back until a day or two ago. This happened on several installs of TB.

Worksforme on 102.2.1 (64-bit), Win 10 (tested on gmail-Imap).
With mail.close_message_window.on_delete = true, the tab/window/existing window (as per Open messages in... setting, tried them all) always goes away immediately when I press DEL or click Delete button.
Was deleting both top or bottom message from a thread with 2 messages, and Threaded was on.
Also tried the same on a non-threaded message.
Confusingly, when checking View > Sort by > on a non-3-pane tab, it will show Unthreaded enabled although it's really not.
Everyone who claims to see this bug, can you please try if the problem persists with ≡ > Help > Troubleshoot Mode…?

I always use "open message in a new windows" not "tab". I tried setting it to "tab" and the problem does not happen. If I try Troubleshoot Mode, will I lose any settings after I turn it off?

BTW Installing TB 102 on several win 10 and Macos changed my sort view to "Threaded" otherwise I probably would never been affected by the problem.

The dialog is a bit hard to understand, see Bug 1726817 for details.
Essentially, do not tick the checkboxes on the dialog if you want to use temporary trouble shooting. Ticking the dialog boxes will make trouble shoot settings permanent, i.e. you would then lose your original settings.

Yes, Threaded is the new default by design. We've understood that you're seeing a connection between this bug and the Threaded setting. However, per my comment 8 I am failing to reproduce this.

I turned on troubleshoot mode and the problem went away. Of course, I don't want to use that mode to solve the problem. Since I do not need Threaded view. I'm fine with how it working now. If I had a new install of TB 102 I wouldn't mind the default install using Threaded, but I don't like that all my upgrades to TB 102 changed my view to Threaded. My 2 cents.... Thanks

Thanks for reporting back John. Are you using add-ons? If yes, can you disable all in Addons manager and then turn them back on one by one to see which one is causing this?

Noted. We've tried to alleviate that in bug 574986.

I disabled all my add-ons and it still occurs. FYI, I'm using Folders-> Unified since I have three Inboxes that I want merged. I played with changing that to ALL and Unified and I think this might be related to the bug.

Reporter,
If you have resolved your issue, please update the bug report describing what you did to resolve it.
Also, do you see the same issue when updating to version 115?
If your original problem happened when updating to version 102, then bug 1773822 is a possible cause, but I don't think we will ever know for sure. Bug 1777606 comment 13 has a workaround for that case.
(apologies if this sounds like generic message - it is)
