Thunderbird version 102.5.0

There are many frustrated people commenting in Support Forum. It always seems worse for those who have never used or seen the 'threaded' view. So clicking on the top level collapsed folder and it rendering dozens of emails to open in dozens of tabs made people concerned about weird bugs etc etc.
People need to be able to set 'unthreaded' on an entire account.

It only works if you only select one folder as follows

  • Select Inbox
  • Set 'View' > 'Sort by' > as 'Unthreaded'
  • Right click on column headers and select 'Apply current view to..' > 'Folder and it's children' > select 'mail account name' and then 'choose a specific top level folder' - not a mail account name folder - which you already know has a 'threaded' setting.

However, this is not a practical solution when you have to do this to all folders in all accounts - one top level folder at a time.

You need to have the following - which is available to select - to work.

  • Select Inbox
  • Set 'View' > 'Sort by' > as 'Unthreaded'
  • Right click on column headers and select 'Apply current view to..' > 'Folder and it's children' > select 'mail account name' and then 'mail account name'
  • Repeat the line immediately above to select other mail accounts.

It does then have a pop up saying that it gets applied to all folders in the mail account.
This should force an unthreaded sort into all folders in that selected mail account.
But it does not.
Any folders with threaded already selected either manually or by default remain threaded.

I'm creating this as a separate bug as requested by Magnus.
Relates to previous 'fixed' bug 574986

Summary: The 'Apply current view to' does not work if mail account name folder is seleted. → The 'Apply current view to' does not work if mail account name folder is selected from pop up menu list.

mailnews.default_view_flags being set to zero

This disables the default 'threaded' being applied to any new folders, so is a helpful preference, but it has no effect on any folders currently set as 'threaded' whether they were set that sort manually or enforced via a default.

Person in Support forum cannot get rid of Threading. This person never uses threading and now finds they are stuck after an update chnaged everything in all folders to threading.

Seems I can't reproduce the problem. Applying to the "account" (root folder) works as it should.

I'm finding it applies to a selected folder. I have a folder called 'Bugzilla' which I have a 'threaded' sort. All other folders are 'unthreaded'.

Select Inbox and email
Right click on column headers and select 'Apply current view to..' > 'Folder and it's children' > select 'mail account name' and then 'Bugzilla'

This works as expected.

Select Inbox and email
Right click on column headers and select 'Apply current view to..' > 'Folder and it's children' > select 'mail account name' and then 'mail account name' (which contains the 'Bugzilla' folder)

This fails. Bugzilla is still threaded.

I don't see that. Thomas, can you reproduce?

(In reply to Magnus Melin [:mkmelin] from comment #5)

I don't see that. Thomas, can you reproduce?

Nope. Works for me perfectly as expected on TB 102.5.0 (64-bit) on Win10, gmail IMAP.
Depending on how many threads you have, and where they are in the list, I find it's pretty hard to see if a folder is threaded or not. The tooltip on the threaded-column toggle button doesn't even change. I guess there's a solid potential for user confusion here.

STR

(I'm using threaded-column header toggle button to toggle threading on/off)

  1. Ensure/set some gmail IMAP folders threaded ([Gmail] > Sent Mail / Important / Test)
  2. Set inbox folder unthreaded (gmail IMAP)
  3. Ensure that the current folder (inbox) is really unthreaded (important! - I think that's where some people might fail)
  4. 'Apply current view to..' > 'Folder and it's children' > select 'mail account name' and then 'mail account name' (john@example.com)

Actual = Expected

  • All folders of 'mail account name' are now unthreaded.

Maybe sth to add to this - in a german Thunderbird I have actually two options for "apply current view to" in the same menu. One that gets correctly translated to german (which is borked) an an english on which does work fine...
