Steps to reproduce:
Do these steps with and then without selecting/focusing a message. On the Message List:
- Click on Star icon, focus another message
- Click on Junk icon, focus another message
- Click on Read icon, focus another message
Actual results:
Step 1&2 : message focused or not, the icon change after you clicked it
Step 3 : the icon update only after you focused another message
After clicking the Read button, it's not visually clear to the user if it has been taken into account
Expected results:
Click on Star/Read/Junk icons in message list should work the same.
Works okay on TB 111b1 & TB 102

I'm not sure if it's a Theme or Message list issue, so blocking for the moment.
I didn't set the regression keyword, as the backend feature is working.
Waiting for triage decision for both, feel free ;-)

Thanks for the report, this seems to be a themeing issue, probably.
Let's see if we can improve the styling of those icons a bit.

I think this bug is about selecting a message rather than focus, right?
- While they typically co-occur, it's possible to have a selected message which isn't focused, even a single one (Hold Ctrl which cursoring up/down from selected message -> only focus will move).
- It's also possible to have a message which is focused, but not selected (Ctrl+Click on selected msg).
(In reply to Nicolas Mandil (:NicolasWeb) from comment #0)
Actual results:
Step 1&2 [Starred
,Junk
]: message focused or not, the icon change after you clicked it
I swear that I've seen this fail on Daily 113.0a1 (2023-03-25) (64-bit), Win10, gmail-IMAP, also for Starred
and Junk
in the same way as Step 3 [Read/Unread
], perhaps related to keeping Thunderbird session open for long or across computer suspend-to-disk periods. After a restart, now I cannot reproduce. Have also seen other weird things like Starred
or Junk
status repeatedly toggling on and off by themselves without user intervention (gmail-IMAP).
Step 3 : the icon update only after you focused another message

All of these indicators reports are all duplicates and we'll tackle them all at once in bug 1824555

*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 1824555 ***
Seems like bug 1824555 hasn't succeeded to fix this.
STR
- Select unread message
- Click on read icon in message row to mark it read, and observe icon
Actual
- read icon in selected message row does not change to green unread icon
Expected
- read icon in selected message row should change to green unread icon (102 has correct behaviour)

Here's a screenshot of the problem - selected unread message lacks green unread icon in the read status column (red arrow). For comparison, star and junk icons are correctly colored.

Richard, after bug 1824555 fixed the functionality, hopefully this should just be a theme/stylesheet issue? See my screenshot attachment 9329693 [details].

This is by design to be visible with every background colour. Think about a tagged message with a green tag colour, then the icon wouldn't be visible when green too.

Isn't it the same then with a message background with the same color as yellow-star or red-junk (than the green on green with unread) ?
Then, in my opinion, these 3 icons should look and behave consistently.
Maybe the Read icon could have a border & be colored, like the two other.

Also 102 behaves like that, the green unread icon is fully white if the message is selected.
We're not changing this behavior for now as per comment 10, maybe after 115 we will explore better solutions for the other icons.
