Steps to reproduce:
(v102.9.0 x32 Win)
Daily.
Mark as read new email by clicking the green icon.
Actual results:
Sometimes it accepts it, sometimes not. Often have to apply this repeatedly, through the day. It is often easier to delete email than wrestle with it.
If you try several, you get mixed results across the batch.
Action seems slow. It's like wrestling with a dodgy latching switch, You just don;t know when it will stay put.
Expected results:
Just accept my instruction that I have read, or am disinterested in reading, the item.
Instantly accept, apply and remember the command.
If there is some back and forth with IMAP, use a different colour to show this state is in flux, or lock the icon until the matter is settled - just not this dodgy behaviour, please.

Alex, fyi: I've seen this happening many times on gmail-IMAP. E.g. I press M
to mark the message unread, which applies for half sec, then flickers, then ends up read, or unread - it's unpredictable. A number of related bugs on record (see Bug 1820006 Comment 5), but this is probably an issue in its own right which deserves developer attention.

Or maybe this is just another fallout/duplicate of bug 1824555, as explained in Bug 1822622 Comment 2?
