Steps to reproduce:

I'm using Thunderbird from Snap, version 115.1.0-2. After upgrading from 102.13.0-1 RSS messages stopped opening in my browser after hitting enter or double-clicking on them. Instead, they open in a new tab in Thuderbird itself. According to https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-subscribe-news-feeds-and-blogs "rss.show.content-base" setting with value 3 should make Thunderbird open such posts in the browser. Now, changing this setting doesn't change the behaviour in any way I can notice, checked all values between 0 and 3.

Steps to reproduce:

  • in configuration set "rss.show.content-base" to "3",
  • go to any subscribed feed, select a news and hit "Enter"

Actual results:

Thunderbird opens a new tab with a summary of the news.

Expected results:

A tab is opened in my browser with URL taken from the news entry.

I'm also seeing this on macOS (13.5.1, Apple Silicon) with Thunderbird 115.2.0 installed via brew. Before the upgrade Thunderbird (102.something) opened a tab with the content on double-clicking, now it only shows the summary in the new tab.

Changing the value of rss.show.content-base does not seem to have any effect.

I can confirm, I'm using "rss.show.content-base" to "0" but Thunderbird still open the feed. It was working with pre-supernova upgrade.

I am seeing this on 115.3.1 on Pop!OS.

I don't actually think we want to fix this. There is little reason that feeds should behave differently from other messages.

So all previous versions were doing it wrong? IMO, this is a regression. A lot of people are used to seeing the full HTML when launching the item
and not a summary as you see with F8. What you are saying is that the behavior of all other messages also display as a summary. If you don't fix
this, the show message body as makes no sense.

But you can set if you want the summary or full version of a feed (well, depening on whether the feed supports it of course). I don't see a huge use case for first reading the summary and then full.
For the "open in browser" option, the url is showing so it's just a click away anyway.

The use case is, that it is way faster and less traffic to first scan through the article summaries and then only load the full articles if they are interesting/relevant (I had rss.show.content-base set to 2).

And yes, I can load the full article by clicking on the link, BUT:

  • it requires to move the mouse to the link, which is annoying for keyboard heavy users
  • it loads the article in a separate application, which usually takes longer than displaying in the message window and requires window/application switching between articles

I would love to have the old behaviour back.

BTW. when you set display as webpage in the above duplicate you just closed, the summary function via F8 is no longer displayed. You no longer have that option. It's either Webpage or Summary. I think that is what people are complaining about. Previously we had both. Today we have either or. Judging by the number of dupes that have been opened and closed, I would think it's a legitimate issue to fix. Not all changes are for the better.

In TB 115.3.3 there is still a checkbox for Show the article summary instead of loading the web page under Account Settings for RSS feed accounts. This has been redundant since TB 115 as only the summary is shown regardless of the setting here. Maybe the checkbox should be removed if the intention is now to only ever display the summary.

Version 115.9.0 and the bug is still there.
Sure, for me this is a bug.
As Andreas explained, I have the same use case - I go over the short summary and only if I am interested in the full article I press "Enter" and read it in the default browser. That was perfect and was working till that regression.
