Details

Every few minutes I am not able to click on any links or interact with any components on an open web page. I am able to change tabs and scroll on the web pages.

Sometimes it fixes itself after a few minutes but more often than not I have to click and focus on another open window and then come back to Firefox, and then I'm able to resume with normal functionality.

I'm currently running
Firefox 118.0.2
14-inch M2 MacBook Pro with 32 GB RAM
macOS Sonoma 14.0 (23A344)

@ffayyaz, thanks for the report. Some questions below.

Would you be able to use our profiler at https://profiler.firefox.com/ to collect a performance profile when the problem is happening? You can use it to collect a profile and then share it and post the link here.

Did this problem appear to start with an update of Firefox? Or with the upgrade to Sonoma?

Can you say if it is happening with any particular site?

I've asked our Apple contact about any known issues being tracked on Sonoma that involve missing mouse clicks.

And here are some other reports of similar issues on Sonoma:

Haik, have we heard anything about this from Apple's side?

No, nothing from Apple about this.

@Fahad, are you still hitting this bug?

I don't know if it has the same cause, but I sometimes experience a problem with the same symptoms. Not just since macOS Sonoma though, but for much longer.

When it happens, it's always directly after a Firefox update. I have experienced this with both Firefox Nightly and the stable Firefox version. With the Nightly version, of course, much more frequently due to the much larger number of updates. But it only happens sometimes, in most cases there is no problem at all.

Firefox does not react to any clicks, neither in the content nor, for example, in the dialog that appears when I want to close Firefox using the keyboard shortcut. But scrolling on the websites or switching tabs is possible. After restarting Firefox, the problem is solved every time and does not reappear.

As I said, the problem first occurred long before macOS Sonoma, but it feels much less frequent since then. There was a time when it happened every few days, now it only happens every few weeks.

In my case, the MacBook with M1 Pro is affected. I'm not sure if this has ever happened to me with my Intel MacBook. From the time period since I first experienced this, it could be that I've only ever had it on the M1 MacBook. On the other hand, I was still a lot on Intel MacBooks during that time. I just don't remember if it happened there, so I don't want to write anything wrong.

We are hitting a similar issue in bug 1811488 after an update/restart or Firefox starting on macOS 14 and older macOS versions. Usually, changing focus from Firefox and back to Firefox will fix the issue in that browsing session.
