I've just experimented with ThreadPaneColumns.addCustomColumn for an add-on in an existing profile. When I added the add-on the column was only shown for folders that I suspect I have not customised previously (e.g. newer/new folders).

This makes discoverability harder for these columns, as the add-ons will have to provide some sort of "not seeing?" prompt which may or may not be accurate/useful depending on the users.
