Weβre requesting updates to support articles related to importing passwords and payment methods from Chrome on Windows.
Due to a recent change in how Chrome encrypts this data, Firefox will:
-
Guide users to use the CSV import flow for passwords (instead of automatic import). -
Disable the import of payment methods from Chrome on Windows entirely.
Support articles should be updated to reflect:
-
Step-by-step instructions for using the CSV import method for passwords via the migration wizard. -
A note that importing payment methods from Chrome on Windows is no longer supported (with an explanation if appropriate e.g. "due to changes in Chrome's encryption mechanism").
Are the user-facing changes mentioned above final? (yes or no)? [REQUIRED]

Hi Alice, thanks for pointing it out. Since this change impacts contributors and users, I think it's safe to say we can specify these details. I'll tag Isabella and Meridel.

Hi Alice,
Yes β the updated articles should definitely include the platform detail (Chrome on Windows only).
Regarding locales and Firefox versions, that part needs a bit of nuance: all locales and Firefox versions are technically affected by the underlying encryption change in Chrome. However, weβre updating the Firefox UI starting in version 139 (English locales only) and version 140 (all locales) to reflect the change β specifically by removing the import options that no longer work.
Itβs totally fine to include a note in the article clarifying that while the issue is broadly applicable, the UI will be updated in those versions to reflect the new behavior. Flavius and I discussed this in the article updates β linking that comment thread here for reference: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gXHOumIaANugMetJisZdGCeyhRDsLYByIXmfQb5I3K0/edit?disco=AAABj4hmAmo. Please let me know if anything is unclear or if you need additional info!

Just to confirm, import of passwords and payment methods is still available from Chrome browsers on macOS but not on Windows or Linux?
See bug 1960560 comment 26 and the reply in bug 1960560 comment 28 ...which links to bug 1513718.

Hi, Flavius,
Yes, I know this bug just applies to changes to import of passwords and payment methods from Chrome on Windows but the bug description includes Bugzilla ticket - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1960560
... which refers to Linux and macOS in the comments I referenced. I was just asking for confirmation because the articles that are being updated also apply to macOS and Linux and I have revisions pending. See:
