I don't think this can be done for native menus (unless macosx supports 
ownerdraw...)

yes, but why?
I filed a bug about this quite a while ago (bug 208017), with an mock-up
screenshot of what I would like. I think it would just make the bookmarks a bit
easier to navigate - you can just look for the seperator labels rather than
having to trawl through all of the bookmarks. Obviously you can use folders, but
you can end up with too many, and convoluted menu hierarchies, when seperators
would have been better. In my opinion it was a bit pointless to add labels for
seperators if they're not going to be used on the bookmarks menu.
If you care, Firefox actually supports these, but only in the bookmarks sidebar.

And the Bookmarks Manager (and probably every other place that trees are used to
display the bookmarks list). The Mozilla Application Suite is the same. That was
bug 121053. I think this bug is about making the necessary changes to the XP
Toolkit menus to allow the separator labels to be seen on the actual Bookmarks menu.
