Just as the summary indicates, imported messages (at least from Outlook) are 
marked as unread initially (actually not until the folder they're contained in 
is accessed for the first time in Thunderbird), even if they were marked as 
read in the source email program.  This left me with thousands of messages I 
had manually change to read status.

Confirming this for the following build & platform:

Platform: PC
Operating system: Windows 2000 pro
Thunderbird build: version 0.7+ (20040727)

I've noted the same behavior when importing from Oulook Express.

Platform: PC/Windows XP
Thunderbird:
Outlook Express: 6.00.2900.2180

I'm not positive, but I think I recall this also happening if you drop an mbox
file into the TB mail directories.

I meant to add the Thunderbird version was 0.7.3.

This also happens with version 0.8 when importing from Eudora 5.2. A similar 
error occurs when importing from Eudora's Outbox which can always contain Sent, 
Queued and Saved-but-not-queued (effectively =Draft) items. All Outbox items 
are imported to the Unsent folder.
comments on different bugs suggest that this happens with Outlook 2003/Outlook
Express 6/Eudora 5.2

Sorry, one of those dupes above was mine -- couldn't seem to find this bug on

There are some very comprehensive specs for the Outlook Express .DBX format
there. Particularly the latter; the "Flags" values have been decoded, the 20th
bit of the Flags descriptor defines whether the message is marked as answered or
not. Plus there's lots of demo C++ code.

Hopefully this helps Thunderbird's import code! If this is fixed in the nightly
builds please post by the way...

Will this be fixed for v3.0?
Using Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 on WinXP, and I'm experiencing the same problem when importing from Outlook 2003.

I'm experiencing the same problem when importing from Outlook 2003 to TB 3.0.3 under Windows 7
Me also - Just imported 2Gb of Outlook 2003 .pst - and *all* messages are now "unread" ... which is a problem because  

I think this is important, because the ultimate success of TB will depend on the ability to do a complete and seamless migration from outlook.
