Really, really weird stuff. I've come across few animated images (GIFs) and
noticed a dramatically high CPU usage when viewing those. This just happened
again and i thought i'd file a bug. Check out the URL i submitted for one of the
images that makes my CPU go through the roof. I will provide more details to
whoever asks them, i'm just not sure what to say.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go the the submitted URL
2. Look at the image
3. Look at your CPU usage (Tested with TaskInfo and WinXP Task Manager)
Actual Results:
CPU was being used 100% by Firefox
Expected Results:
Nothing, that's the problem.
Computer info, if it's useful to anyone:
Processor: Intel P4 @ 2.67GHz (Not overclocked)
RAM: 1Gb DDR (Two DIMMS)
OS: Windows XP Professional with all updates to date.

OK I can reproduce now Windows 2003 firefox 20040513 trunk
steps to reproduce:
1) turn on automatic image resizing (Options | Advanced ...)
2) view the given URL so that image resizing is triggered
3) watch CPU go 100%
remark:
CPU stays at 0 when browser window is maximized or automatic image resizing is off

We store images internally at original size, so painting a resized version
_will_ be slow. Doing so over and over (as in, when it's animating) will be
correspondingly slow.

It doesn't matter wether image resizing is on or not, the bug *still* happens in
both cases.

i've got firefox0.8 running under win2k with 600mhz CPU
when i load the url, my CPU usage is < %10. when i minimize browser so that
image is resized, my CPU usage is < %30.

Reporter, try the url with a clean profile and without all those extensions.

The URL supplied here didn't work for me, this one does:
http://home.comcast.net/~balivandi/fark/PeopleInSquareBig.gif
Auto-resizing is NOT enabled, but the CPU usage is really high and the animation
runs slowly. IE6 works fine with under 50% CPU usage.
Interestingly under Linux with Firefox 1.0.3 it also works fine..

Clean profile, Deer Park Alpha 2, and I'm having the same problem as the
submitter...high CPU load when I come upon a page with more than two or three
animated GIFs.
Oddly enough, I'm running Linux.

Confirmed here too.
Appeared after upgrading graphics card from NVidia MX440 to NVidia 6600GT (and
upgrading drivers to 77.71. latest 77.77 drivers are the same). Disabling
"bitmap acceleration" by turning down "hardware acceleration" in
display-properties, settings, advanced, troubleshoot is a workaround for me.
Deer Park Alpha 2 seems to have the same problem.
My Example:
http://eclectech.co.uk/b3ta/usbee.gif
or in page:
http://eclectech.co.uk/b3ta/usbee.gif.html
Oddly, the CPU usage seems to be proportional to the amount of the image
unobscured by other windows.

With Hardware acceleration on full the gif i have attached gives me +50% CPU
usage (with hyper threading). However with the acceleration one notch down i
get almost no CPU usage. Other non Gecko browsers do not display high CPU use
and it is not seen on Linux (tested on latest Ubuntu) only Win32 (possibly in
conjunction with newer DX versions).
XP SP2 DX9c, P4 3.2, NV 5950 Ultra 77.77
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b4) Gecko/20050822
Firefox/1.0+ ID:2005082206
There are quite a few bugs which may or may not be related. 194627 170272 86319
143046 293222 there is also a animated image tracking bug (GIF and MNG) 119597

Fix with latest Nvidia 80.xx drivers (at least with 81.82 and 81.84).

Being chained to a bug which is older than 2 years is ... well folks, you simply don't care. As with a lot of open source projects, the REAL discipline is missing here or at least has become a victim of the never ending we-want-new-bells-and-whistles hunger.
The good news: In the meantime I removed the transparency from my animated gif and the high CPU load is gone.
And I removed my old testfile, too. Because I'm not interested in loosing bandwith due to hundreds of poor Firefox Bugzilla users who want 'to have a look' while the state of this bug isn't even assigned.

The image on the page is a looping GIF. The problem occurs when the GIF loops. A burst of CPU usage and the mouse freezes for 500 ms.

Anyone who has seen this bug - do you still see it using Firefox 2?
FF2 browser.enable_automatic_image_resizing default is true and image from comment 19 is http://artists.reactorinteractive.net/materials/Bits_and_Bobs.gif

I don't see 100% utilization. What I see is a toggling of CPU use from %5 to 25% (in Task Manager), with the higher use seen on the image transitions and the lower between transitions. My mouse doesn't freeze between frames.
FF v2.0.0.6 on WinXP/SP2; 1.80GHz P4; 1024MB RAM.

Tim reports "testing with
http://img.turn.com/r/img?url=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.turn.com%2Fimg-data%2F300x250_even2_4.gif
Under Windows 2003, the CPU usage looks normal to me."
FWIW, in bug 293222 the problem was resolved in '05 by using newer nvidia drivers.
