If having more then one mail account, and have not set the default account,
then the get mail button don't work at all. Or using function key F5.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.setup more then one mail account
2.make sure that not account are set to DEFAULT
3.press get mail button or use function key F5
Actual Results:
nothing
Expected Results:
Get the mail from the mail server
The Get Mail button doesn't do anything on a multiple account configuration,
even when a default account is set. I have to open the accounts submenu from the
button and select 'Get All New Messages' for it to do what it's supposed to.
incidentally, the accounts submenu of the Get Mail button shows the last tooltip
shown anywhere in the client, rather than a tooltip that is relevant or useful
or no tooltip at all.
I'm running Thunderbird 1.0 on Windows XP.

This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01".
This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.
While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a
copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and
you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.
If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
Thank you for your help in this matter.
The latest beta releases can be obtained from:

The Get Mail button still doesn't work in Thunderbird 1.5 on WinXP with multiple
mail accounts configured. Nothing happens when it is pressed. The button's
dropdown menu option 'Get All New Messages' works ok.

For what it is worth, I have the same problem only I am running on Windows Me and have only one email account. If I click on the "Get Mail" button, nothing happens. However, if I choose the arrow next to the button, I can choose either "Get mail from all accounts" or "Get mail from my <account name>" and either one will pick up my mail. So there is a work around, it's just an extra step of hassle.
Two other troubles showed up about the same time. 1) It takes forever to load my inbox and if I try to use certain functions it gives me some type of "processing folder, try again later" message, and 2) the program keeps trying to update itself with the 1.5 patch. The patch fails (because it has already been installed) and then it downloads the full program and reinstalls. Then the whole process starts over again with the patch. These two do not seem to be related to the "Get Mail" but I'll leave that call to the debuggers.

is there anything I can do or info I can provide so this can be confirmed and fixed? a 'Get Mail' button not working on a mail client for over a year and a half is quite annoying... plus a search shows there are many related open bugs regarding this button not doing what it's supposed to... it this going to be fixed in 2.0?

amichai2, can you give some more details about your problem? What folder do you have selected when you press get new mail? Are you using IMAP or POP3? Are you using the global inbox or separate accounts for each pop3 server?

and, also, does anything appear on the js console when you hit the get new mail button?
I have Local Folders with a bunch of folders under it (the default inbox/unsent/drafts/sent/junk/trash and some custom folders). I have several accounts configured, all of them pop3. They are all delivered to the standard Local Folders inbox, from which I move them to the other custom folders manually, with the exception of Junk which is moved automatically, and one other folder which a filter on the inbox moves mail into (though this is relatively new and the bug is old, so it's likely unrelated). I just tried selecting all folders one by one and pressing 'Get Mail' - none of them do anything. the JavaScript console shows nothing either. As far as the symptoms I am aware of show, the button indeed does absolutely nothing. Selecting the button's drop down menu followed by any of the menu selections, either 'Get All New Messages' or any specific account, delivers the mail properly. All passwords are remembered as well - I'm never asked to enter them manually or anything like that - delivery is immediate and successful using the menu. This problem has been consistent in all my use of Thunderbird, since 1.0 and up to the current 1.5.0.5 version.
Anything else I should check?

I'm quite disappointed to find out that in Thunderbird 2 Beta 1 this basic functionality is still not working... why is pressing the 'Get Mail' button so different from whatever TB does when it fetches new mail when it's first launched, or when the 'Get All New Messages' item is selected in the dropdown menu, or when once in 10 minutes it goes and fetches new mail with no problem?? Why can't the button just do the same thing that happens everywhere else where mail is fetched? Is there any chance this will ever be fixed? Will this button ever do something?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but when you set up your accounts, did you check the box that says "Include this server when getting new mail"? Under account settings, server settings for your pop3 servers, click the advanced button, and look at the check box. If that's not checked, try checking it.
Comment 12•18 years ago

Yes, the "Include this server when getting new mail" checkbox is activated on all accounts but one (tried checking the unchecked one as well - no difference). I suppose this is why it does fetch the mail properly from all accounts on startup, every 10 minutes, etc. Only the Get Mail button does nothing.

No, that checkbox only applies to what happens when you click get new mail with the local folders account or one of its folders selected. Those other operations are controlled by the per-server prefs. You might try sending me your prefs.js and I can look and see if there's anything odd-looking.

David, I'll send you my prefs.js by direct mail. Since I am using "Inbox for this server's account" the "Include this server when getting new mail" option is disabled so I cannot put it on. I am seeing this bug on Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 on Linux.
Basically the problem is that I have multiple (POP) accounts and when I hit the "Get mail" button on the toolbar I expect it to get mail for all accounts but it gets mail only for the account for which message list is being displayed currently (whether mail account or RSS).

I think this and bug 125885 are mutual duplicates.

Shriramana - that's what the get all messages drop down on the get new mail button does. I believe there's an extension that changes the default behaviour of the get new mail button to get all messages.

I have just downloaded and installed Version 2.0.0.0 (20070326) and the Get Mail and specifically the Get All Messages Button and drop down does not work after some time.
Initially upon opening the program it is fine and then after some time (10 minutes or so) it just seems to hang.
Never had this problem before with any previous Versions of Thunderbird. My system and normal software are still the same.

For me, Get All messages has always worked ...
But i experienced a strange problem yesterday on a windows XP PC with TB 2.0.0.3
--> 4 pop servers
--> each pop servers configured to check and download automatically all messages at startup and every 10'
--> password stored
all was going fine, but since 3 weeks one of the pop account never retrieves messages at startup, nor every 10 minutes
If we choose "Get all message", it retrieve only 3 pop servers, not the last ...
The only solution is to manually select the account by clicking on the arrow in Get Mail to retrieves the emails ...
I've check prefs.js and the account seems similar to other
I've also try to set the account to default ... no way
This bug is those who seems the nearer of my problem ... but maybe i've to fill a new bug ...

I noticed the same problem with two POP accounts on SeaMonkey 1.1.2 on Mac OS X 10.4.9. The last account is not automatically checked for new incoming mail and the Get Msgs button does not check the last account even when the arrow and Get All New Messages is selected. I have to manually select the last account to get the new messages.
I too will file a new bug with SeaMonkey.

Hi, several revisions ago the get mail icon was omitted from that and later versions of firefox. I think this was a poor decision. As a work around I found ga new con set that allowed me to ad in the get mail icon. In one of the latest releases the get mail function quit working. the same icon allows me to launch send a message and that works. I don't know what the problem is between firefox and thunderbird but firefox deleted the abilit to easily call thunderbird by eliminating the Icon. Consequently individuals have designed work arounds get mail is an example. However frequent firefox revisions prevent the previous ad-ins from working. It is a bid hassle for us dumb users,
.
one other clue... clicking tools and get mail does not work either.
thanks, joel

I have the same problem on a fresh installation of Thunderbirbird 2.0.0.6 on Win XP SP2. Clicking the Get Mail button does nothing. No message appears on the error console.
I have 6 pop3 accounts with 2 smtp servers defined. Each of the pop accounts uses the global inbox; each has "Include this server when getting new mail" selected. The drop down "Get All New Messages" does work. This article, http://kb.mozillazine.org/Get_mail_for_all_accounts, suggests that "Get all new messages" is the button to use, but if that's the case, I can't puzzle out what the get mail button is supposed to do instead.
Individual account drop down buttons work.
