I really think it's important to be able to drag emails into the caledar, and
tasks sections of Calendar. For example, I get an email requesting I do
something. I don't have time to follow up with it so I drag that email message
to 12:00 tomorrow, and add my notes to the message. I should be able to do the
same thing with the tasks list, and then be able to add contact information to
that from the address book.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Drag or right click an email message in Mozilla mail, or thunderbird.
2.Choose a date or time, or task category to submit the message to.
3.Append notes, or contact info from the address book.

Additionally, I think that it would splendid if you could automatically set
to-do tasks using the "Label" funtionality that exists in Mozilla Mail (
http://www.mozilla.org/mailnews/specs/labels/ ). For example, if I select the
"To Do" label, it would great if it was added to the Tasks list.

Reporter:
This looks like a duplicate of bug 137093. I see that you've already
commented about that fact in that bug. Unless you feel that this bug adds
something additional/deals with a different issue, please mark this as a
duplicate. If you feel it is not a duplicate, please clarify why it is distinct.
This is distinct from bub 137093 because this focuses on the email itself
while 137093 is about the function of ical attachments and the emails that
they originate from emails. These are two distinct functions. I believe this
one is more critical simply because it is more usefull and does not depend
upon actually receiving an ical attachment. On the other hand while the two
are distinct, their interface should be similar if not the same. Therefore
they should both be considered when looking at adding this function to the
calendar project.

Please note, that further productivity improvement only comes, if you store the reference (incl. back-refs) with the particular mail/task/appointment - in order to enable easy searches later (for tasks/appointments related to an email or likewise emails related to an appointment or task).

How can we ever do this with the new separate views of calendar and email?

I would do it like Outlook does it. There you can drag emails to the calendar icon and that opens up the event dialog (at the current time) with the email content in the description field.

This way it should work for normal drop, I would propose to make it even better - hovering dragged e-mail over Calendar button for e.g. 1s should switch the view and allow the user to choose specific date and drop it there (and of course opening appropriate event dialog).

See releated Bug 388018 that is still waiting for the specifications.

Also, dragging into the today pane's today, tomorrow could also pre-fill the event dialog.
Or even, when we correctly support multiple windows, emails could maybe be dragged between windows.

It would be good to have this in 0.8

As Bug 388018 is fixed would this bug now focus on enhancing drag & drop (e.g. comment 14 ) ?
Or we should kill it and file follow-up bugs.

Not going to happen for 0.8.

Bug 459641 is currently new version of this bug so I'll wait with doing this (if Bug 459641 would not fix it fully I will mention filed bugs there).
