At the Patent/Trademark Office website each patent has an associated image list.
The images are opened in Quicktime plugin (in TIFF format). You can reach this
page by clicking on "images" link in the given URL.
I use Quicktime 6.5.1 plugin (the latest one) and it doesn't show the pictures
in 95-98% of the time.
IE doesn't have this problem

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to given URL
2. Click on "Images" link
3. Wait for the Quicktime plugin to load
Actual Results:  
Blank white screen instead of TIFF

Expected Results:  
Show the TIFF (as in IE)

I have an extremely similar problem in Firefox 1.0 Preview Release: Mozilla/5.0
(Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040913 Firefox/0.10, with
QuickTime plugin v6.5.1.

I, too, am trying to see TIFF images from the USPTO.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. At http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/srchnum.htm
2. Enter patent number (Use example of 5,146,634)
3. Click on red "Images" button at top
4. Wait for the Quicktime plugin to load

Actual Results:  
Instead of seeing image, I see either a blank white image or a partial TIFF
image- perhaps an inch or two of the scanned paper form. Sometimes scrolling up
and down will reveal parts of the image.

Expected Results:  
Visible TIFF image

I also have this bug under Mac OS X.
I can sometimes get the image to view properly by clicking the red right arrow
to go to the next page, and then going back.

i uninstalled quicktime and installed alternatiff

AlternaTIFF:  http://www.alternatiff.com/

works like a charm

it is impossible to search government patent data base because it it all in TIFF
format.  TIFF does not display properly using latest Quicktime plug in QT
version is 6.5.2.  Does not work on PC or a MAC under OSX 10.3.

Not too many sites use TIFF but USPTO.gov is a major one that does and can only
be used with TIF viewer.  If you want inventors using Firefox please fix ASAP!

 I have the same problem with the uspto. Quicktime only displays a couple of
lines of the tiff file. Version 1.0.2 and WinXP.

 Quicktime 6.5.1 plugin keeps trying to display tiff's from the uspto even after
installing interneTIFF. This is after enabling tiff for interneTIFF in
tools/options/downloads/file types/plugins. And about:plugins still showed
quicktime as handling tiffs. I had to rename npqtplugin7.dll and restart to get
it to quit.

Attachment: a quicktime plugin doesn't show TIFF images

The QuickTime Plug-in is opening my tiff files and does not show the file(s)
properly.  Even though the file type association is not set for QuickTime it
still opens the file for display within the browser.

With Firefox moving to click-to-play all plugins (except for Flash, for now), the move towards a plugin-less web suggests that this bug is a WONTFIX.
