It was working under Firefox 0.9.3, but stopped working under 1.0pre.

By (adam _at_ matan .dot. name) :

The same problem appeared at my Machine. More details :

1. My Firefox 1.0 PR Gecko/20041001 is running under a newly installed WinXp so
naturally no bookmarks were imported from any foreign source.

2. This problem reappeared after removing firefox, using a registry correction
program, and reinstalling.

3. Bookmarks are neither savend in the bookmark folder nor in the bookmark toolbar.

**************************************
I see the same behavior on a Windows XP system. Bookmarks are always lost after
restart. Looking in the JavaScript console, I see FILE_NOT_FOUND errors for
bookmarks.js. The bookmarks are fine in memory and I can even export them as an
HTML file and then re-import when starting again. I downloaded 1.0PR again and
installed over the current installation, but it didn't help. I'm using Firefox
on multiple other XP systems with no issue.
I have the following to add on the subject of this bug (my experiences however
being not with Linux, but Windows XP):

Getting fed up with IE, I decided to install the Mozilla-suite. Upon entering
the site, I saw that there was also a Mozilla Firefox browser and decided to try
that out. I did, however, still install the Mozilla-Suite.

Enjoying the Firefox browser, and being a little annoyed with the slowliness (at
least on my machine) of Mozillas Mail-component, I subsequently decided to
install Mozilla Thunderbird, following which I completely removed the
Mozilla-suite (no longer needing it).

Up until this point I'd had no problems with my bookmarks in Firefox. After the
uninstallation of the Mozilla Suite, however, my bookmarks disappeared, and ever
since I have not been able to save any. That is, importing (from IE) or saving
new works well, until I shut down Firefox. When I re-open Firefox, all bookmarks
(ALL!) are gone.

I have tried reinstalling the Mozilla Suite. Nothing! I have tried uninstalling
both the suite and Firefox, rebooting my computer, and then re-installing
Firefox. Nothing!

Nothing!

...Oh, and when you choose "Bookmark this page" from the menu, and press "OK!"
in the window, the window doesn't close!

Most likely that's a result of a read-only permissions issue in the profile
directory. The bookmark dialog not going away is a dead giveaway.
Sadly no. I have set ALL files on my system drive to be Read/Write, to no avail.
The "Bookmark This Page" adds the bookmark (although not removing the window),
but it isn't saved for next startup.

I've come to suspect that I'm missing a folder or file somewhere (somehow), and
that Firefox - rather than creating said folder or file, or prompting for one -
simply ignores it and does nothing (which should certainly be changed, if this
is the case). Problem is, I have NO idea what folder or file that would be, nor
where to place it.
It is *NOT* a problem with file system permissions, at least under Linux.

The problem arose under the first pre-release for Firefox 1.0, but went away with the second
pre. This includes the bookmark save dialogue being correctly dismissed instead of remaining
on-screen. It is clearly a bug in the Firefox software [which has since been fixed].

I recommend the newer pre-release.
Did you notice the part where I wrote that it worked fine until I uninstalled
the Mozilla Suite?

Besides, I just downloaded what I can only assume is the most recent release of
Firefox, installed it, and proceeded to notice that nothing had changed. The
bookmark window still does not go away, and the bookmarks are still gone on the
next startup!
same problem with windown 2000 proffesional
I am seeing this problem as well. If I open the Bookmarks manager and create a
new bookmark, it works fine for that session. However, after I shutdown Firefox
and start a new Firefox session, the new bookmarks are gone.

Currently running: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.3)
Gecko/20041101 Firefox/1.0RC2

Everyone that is seeing problems with bookmarks, have you tried uninstalling
any previous versions on your system and removing the old istallation directory
and reinstalling the latest version of Firefox? Please try this with a fresh
profile using 1.0 or 1.0.1 and see if the problem goes away.

Also note that installing new versions (either with the installer or a
.zip/.tar) over a previous zip installation causes a lot of problems.
tweaking summary to be more descriptive, also OS->all as this is reported on win
and linux.

I've been using Firefox 1.0.7 for about a week. Yesterday, when I reopened it,
all my bookmarks were gone. The memory within revisited sites and retyped words
is still fine. The History feature is unaffected. Only the Bookmarks are missing.

Every time I restart my laptop my bookmarks and bookmarks toolbar are cleared out, which is quite annoying as a college student with all of my complicated professor's websites to type in everytime. however, the history is not cleared out. not turning off my laptop is not an option, it's old and it reallt strains the system.
bug 249150 is a similar bug, only that it happens on windows.

Now we know that losing bookmarks is a cross-platform bug.
Depends on: lostbookmarks
sorry for bugspam, long-overdue mass reassign of ancient QA contact bugs, filter on "beltznerLovesGoats" to get rid of this mass change

I think i have the same Prolem described here since i have installed : Firefox 2.0.0.1 an my Windows XP machine.
If i'm saving a bookmark i can still see it while i'm in the current session.
But if i'm ending firefox and restarting it again will not present me the saved bookmark again.
This is really an issue which needs to be solved soon or a circumvention should be provided.
It did not occur with an earlier versin i used.It appeard with this version the first time after a completely new installation.
Manni: The bug you are experiencing is most likely bug 364599, which is a permissions problem that will be fixed in 2.0.0.2.

My problem is that twice after my computer has freezed up during use of Windows media player, I then restart and notice that all Bookmarks listed after Bookmarks Toolbar are gone, inlcluding most of the Toolbar links. How do I retrieve them and how do I prohibit it from happening again?

Please see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks for Information how to recover lost bookmarks.

This is a dupe, and shouldn't be reproducible on trunk (if you have STR that we don't recover from well, please provide those!)

My bookmarks disappear after the computer has awoken from standby mode (firefox3 on Windows XP). Last time I noticed that the address bar, the reload button weren't working, and the home page reverted to Firefox default page.
With clean install of Firefox 3.0.1 on Mac OS X 10.5.4 my bookmarks disapear. It will add the bookmarks, but lose them once I quit and relaunch firefox. I have gone back to firefox 2.0.0.16.
The problem disappeared if you follow steps described in bug 457325 comment 1.
I think that this bug may be closed as a duplicate of bug 457325.
Any issues that people are seeing with Firefox 3.0 would be better served by filing a new bug. The issue people were seeing with Firefox 2.0 and earlier are no longer valid because the entire bookmarking engine was replaced in Firefox 3.0.

Since Firefox 2.0 is no longer supported, this bug is INVALID.
