first listed Outgoing Server (SMTP) used rather than the one marked as the default

Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511
I first saw this is rev 1.7.6 and then updated to 1.7.8 to verify that it was
still there.
From the main mail window, I opened
Edit -> "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings"
Outgoing Server (SMTP)
Advanced...
I have two ISP's listed here (one for each of two places that I connect to the
internet).
smtp-server.austin.rr.com:25
smtp.earthlink.net:25 (Default)
When I am at the house that is served by Earthlink (via a cable modem and
through a router/bridge), the above setup does not work. When I attempt to send
e-mail, I get a notification box that says it is contacting
smtp-server.austin.rr.com and then another box saying that the server does not
allow relays and that my e-mail is not sent. If I switch the default to using
the rr.com server, I get the same message. I have tried making changes to the
default settings, exiting mozilla and restarting and I have tried deleting the
top entry in the server list and re-entering it so that the order is changed.
In every case, the result is consistent with what would happen if mozilla
ignored the "Default" flag and simply picked the first entry in the list of servers.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. put an ISP that refuses relay as your first SMTP server (suggest earthlink)
2. don't use authorization (rely on ISP to recognize your IP number as theirs)
3. attempt to send e-mail
Actual Results:
See Details
Expected Results:
I expect it to use the SMTP server marked as "Default"

I have found exactly the same problem and I am using Thunderbird 10.0.7 on a G4 PowerBook using Mac OSX 10.4.3
I can confirm that this happens with Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 (20051201) which was just downloaded and reinstalled on Windows XP Professional SP2.
The default Outgoing Server (SMTP) is not used, but instead the first listed entry in "Tools -> Account Settings -> Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings" is used to send mail.
There does not seem to be an "Always Use Default SMTP Server" setting as described in Bug# 222388.

String of "Always Use Default SMTP Server" is when Mozilla/Seamonkey.
When Thunderbird 1.5, it is "Use Default Server".
Go Tools/Account Settings/Manage Identities, and see each settings thru "Edit" button, and go "settings" tab, then see your "Outgoing Server(SMTP)" choice.
Please note that choice of "Use Default Server" and choice of "xxx.yyy.zzz(default)" is not identical.

This does not work! Changing the field to Always Use Default does not change which SMTP server is used. Thunderbird 2.0.0.0 still uses the first SMTP server that was set up and it can not be changed. If you have an ISP go out of business and it was your default, you now can no longer send any mail. The program keeps trying to use the old server which times out. Is there any patch or utility that can change this setting manually? Changing a new account to default does not change the outgoing SMTP server and it should. This is still clearly a bug that must be resolved.

I am using version 1.5.0.10 (20070221) of Thunderbird for the Mac. I have found that going to Tools>Account settings and selecting the account identity ie the name of the account. This brings up a box with the account name at the top and a pop up menu labeled Outgoing Server (SMTP): at the bottom. This menu gives a choice of all the SMTP servers you have plus the option "Use default server". If this option is selected then it will indeed use the default server.

Thanks for the correction. Of course I found it 30 minutes after I posted. I guess sometimes walking away and getting a another cup of coffee fixes the problem.

Further to comment #7 2007-05-03 07:49:50 PDT. If you are sending new email this works but if you are replying to a received email it doesn't! It still uses the server at the top of the list.

Confirming comment #7. Same with Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; rv:1.9b5pre) Gecko/2008032401 SeaMonkey/2.0a1pre and 1.1.9rc

The problem does not seem to be fixed with Thunderbird 5.0.
I even suspect it has been reintroduced with that version 5.0.
I've checked all my accounts, whose "Serveur sortant (SMTP)" are set to "Utiliser le serveur par défaut" (Outgoing SMTP serveur = Use default -- in French).
Details:
I had 4 outgoing SMTP servers configured.
smtp.free.fr was my default.
I tried to configure smtp.wanadoo.fr to be my default, but figured out smtp.free.fr was still used for sending my emails (which did not work since I was using a orange/wanadoo connection at this time).
Restarting Thunderbird did not change the thing even though smtp.wanadoo.fr was still configured to be the default.
I had to delete all other smtp server configurations to force thunderbird using smtp.wanadoo.fr.
Please do your best for a bug fix. It's quite unbearable to have to crash down a smart configuration because of a bug like that.
Seems to be related to foolowing bugs :
* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=450113 "sends via the non-default account until i delete all other smtp accounts except the intended one"
* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=529905 "manual account setup does not default to Use Default Server for outgoing server"
And possibly:
* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62510 "ISP files: SMTP server overwrites default SMTP server"
Thanks
I am afraid that TB45 brings this back(!)
That is, over the course of several years, I added a few SMTP servers to the list of SMTP servers, and
despite the fact that accounts specify the SMTP server that each account wants to use,
the FIRST time, TB is restarted, TB seems to want to use
the SMTP server that is listed at the top no matter what the particular account has selected
(among the several SMTP servers in the list).
I have to delete the topmost SMTP server from the list until the
one desired is at the top (and actually the default).
Something is wrong...
TIA

Was this actually ever fixed, or fixed then came back? very alarming this bug has sat here for 10 years. WOW.
So yes I have the same issue, and it will be annoying having to manipulate the one I want as default to top of list.
