STEPS TO REPRODUCE

1. Make sure you have two people with the same first name in your address book
(e.g., Mike Smith and Mike Crabapple).
2. Open a compose window and type "Mi" quickly.

RESULT
Autocomplete finishes the address to the first Mike in the address book (Mike Crabapple).

EXPECTED
I should get to choose which Mike I am going to send the message to from an atuocomplete pop-up.
This only happens with the name Mike. I have two Chris entries and it works fine.
Ah ha! It only happens to new address book entries. Anything I have entered recently suffers from this problem. If they have been in the address book awhile, this problem does not occur.
When you attempt to reproduce this, make sure you create the duplicate entries today.
Even exported address book, deleted all addresses, restarted Thunderbird, imported address book with no change.
Sorry for all the spam, but I finally figured it out. It's when there are two identical first names ONLY. If there are three or more, it works properly.
Summary: Autocomplete fails when two people in Address Book have same first name → Autocomplete fails when exactly two people in Address Book have same first name
This literally makes it impossible to address mail to the second person without typing out the entire name and address. It also can cause mail to be sent to the wrong people if you don't pay very close attention. -> major since it breaks the functionality of address book if there are two people with the same name.
Severity: normal → major
I concur, I see this behaviour too, with a brand new profile. I've filed a similar bug, which is probably a dupe of this one: 322900.
*** Bug 322900 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
We have several people with the same first name in our LDAP-based address book, and this problem doesn't come up.
It has to be two. If you have three or more with the same name the problem does not occur.
The bug talks about /two/ people with the same name, any more or less and the bug doesn't show.
This is most likely a duplicate of bug 314047, for which I just supplied a patch.
Anyone still see this on the latest 1.8 branch and trunk builds? I think this was fixed per Bug 314047.

should have been closed out.
