20060201 trunk Long subject lines are not wrapped when reading email, making it impossible to read the whole subject without resorting to view source. Long subjects should be wrapped in the UI even if they aren't in the message source.
Agreed! It's always a pain to read the subject of bugmail, and hovering over the Subject column is a very bad workaround.

It may be non-obvious, but if you highlight the subject and try to go to the end of the subject, it will scroll so you can see it. In the preview pane that is.
Moving off bugs that didn't make the deadline for Thunderbird 2.

Oh, but this depends. Even the very non-obvious "scrolling by highlighting" is not working everywhere as expected. In the normal-expanded(!) header pane (containing subject, from, date to) of msg preview(!) of TB 2 RC 1 try mouse-highlighting long subject field beyond screen border - nope, doesn't work, no scrolling to the end of subject (BUG). it DOES work if you use the the keyboard for highlighting (shift+cursor and the like), or even just cursor through long subject line, but these "scrolling methods" are VERY non-obvious due to Bug 376486 (cursor not visible in header fields). As an interim fix, it would help at least to have a tooltip with the full subject (perhaps truncated after a reasonable length, cf. bug 192562) when we hover about the truncated subject line in header pane. btw: This bug has been first filed by Karl Palsson as early as 2003-06-27(!) in bug 192562 comment #6: "I can actually see more of the subject in the title bar than in the mail itself."

The ability to wrap the subject in the headers pane will become even more useful with the soon-to-be-released Lightning 0.7. Lightning will add another pane on the right side of Thunderbird (to show today's events and tasks). The effect of this is that we will have even less width in the headers pane, so it would be very nice if the subject wrapped. Does anyone know a way that I can do this today via userchrome.css?

I constantly work with long subject lines in my daily job and this issue has become a bit of a nuisance for me. Dragging my mouse through the subject line so that it horizontally scrolls for me is a bit frustrating. Every other mail client shows the entire subject line with word wrap.

As something of alternative I've filed bug 413487 - "brief" headers (normal mode) should display more of subject (and less of address) - although this wrap bug is perhaps the more important of the two. Bug 213725 is seamonkey equivalent. And it it indicates netscape displayed the full subject. Are there any lightning/calendar bugs that this should block? And while I'm here, I'll note that this usability issue is increasingly annoying.
I suspect bug 449691 will resolve this. This bug by itself wouldn't block tb3, so marking blocking-tb3-

(In reply to comment #9) > I suspect bug 449691 will resolve this. Now that this bug has been checked in, could we have a screenshot to see if that's really fixed when displaying very long subjects? Wayne, are you running nightly builds? Could you attach a screenshot for us?
It's not taken care of yet - that's why this is marked as dependent on bug 456814.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1pre) Gecko/20090618 Shredder/3.0b3pre This 6year-old bug (cf. bug 192562 comment #6) is about basic mail reading functionality that is still missing at present. Will someone have mercy? As an interim fix, it would help at least to have a tooltip with the full subject (perhaps truncated after a reasonable length, cf. bug 192562) when we hover about the truncated subject line in header pane.
Being worked on in bug 489609.
