User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4
Build Identifier: mozilla thunderbird version 1.5.0.4 (20060516), downloaded from portableapps.com

i have two address books, one personal address book (default), & other i created called extra add book. the first book consists of several lists. when i select multiple contacts in the first address book, & drag & drop them into any of its own list, only few or no contacts will be copied. all are not copied.

then i go to the second address book (extra add book), & select all contacts. i try drag & dropping all of them into one of the lists of the first address book (personal address book), but again the same problem, only some 15 contacts are copied. the rest of them, (about 200) are not copied. so it means that at the moment, i do not have a means to transfer multiple addresses from one address book into one of the address book lists of the default address book. there is simply no way of doing that now. u can try exporting into a ldif file, & reimporting, but the import will be into the main address book, not possible to directly import into any list.

actually the drag & drop should simply work. this is a bug.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.create some list inside the default address book. try transferring multiple contacts from the main book into any of these lists.
2.create one more address book with more contacts. try selecting all contacts of the second add book & drag & drop into any list of the first address book.
3.
Actual Results:
dag & drop of multiple contacts just does not work properly.

Expected Results:
drag & drop of contacts, across lists & address book must work.

i am using default theme. i tried the non portable version of the software. no change.
Do your contacts have duplicate email addresses, or blank email addresses? If so the lists won't handle them correctly and there are other bugs (I'll find the references later) that cover this.

i have big mailing list & have more than two thousand contacts. there is no way of removing duplicate contacts automatically as of now, & so there are surely many duplicate contacts. (should not TB be able to handle duplicate contacts by itself ? i know about a duplicate contact extension, but that does not work !)

but when i select about 200 addresses, bugs related to duplicate contacts may not be affecting the drag & drop of every contacts, (there may be at the maximum 5 duplicate contacts in 200) generally very few contacts are copied, please try doing that & u will know what i mean.
Because of CPU problems with earlier published version of Thunderbird (1.5) I installed nightly build version 3 alpha 1 (20060713) the other day. I have just added a new person to the address book using the right click, Add to Address Book method. I find I can no longer drag and drop the new card into a sub group of "Personal Addresses" though I can drag it into "Collected Addresses" (whatever that is). If I do this it gets *moved* out of Personal Addresses into Collected Addresses and is not copied (which is what I used to do by dragging into a sub-group. The only way to get the entry into the sub-group is to double click the sub-group and start typing the name and then select from a list.

Your comments here are not to do with this bug - please keep issues separate. However for the record, this is intended functionality implemented by bug 35837 i.e. addresses can now be moved and copied whereas before they could only be copied. To copy addresses you now have to hold down the ctrl key whilst dragging - to drag into a mailing list you have to use the ctrl key.

Mark Banner: this bug is about dragging to mailing lists, not to address books.

Note that in current 2b1 builds, the cursor changes to DoNotDrop when hovering over a list. If you hold down the ctrl key, it changes to the Copy cursor.
(See bug 349044.)

However, as originally reported, only one of the address cards will be copied; in my testing (2b1-1018, Win2K) I could select a half-dozen addresses and only one would be copied over. Possibly this is related to bug 58485, but as I noted there, that particular bug is impossible to test for other reasons.

Bug 58485 was messy when this was duped, it was really about a MAC-only problem where you couldn't drag cards into the *open* Mailing list *properties dialogue* window. Whereas this bug here is about dragging many contacts onto a single, closed mailing list item contained in the AB view, and it's reported against Windows.

So this is no longer a dupe of bug 58485.
Tentatively, marking as dupe of 520017 which is currently resolved incomplete.
Some things have been fixed anyway since this was filed, so I don't think we'll miss anything here.
Outch, I didn't see the dupes here, but I don't think they are fit.
Dupes of this bug should be revisited to find better bugs of which they are dupes.

Bug 248786: Trying to drag contacts without email addresses ("blank email addresses") into a list causes havoc and all sorts of undefined UX states, as described in Bug 248786 Comment 15, Bug 248786 Comment 16.

This bug looks like duplicate of that.
