new and replied messages do get a star of sorts and an arrow, respectively, but normal messages don't, so the subject text ends up oddly aligned in threads trunk tbird 20060816 linux

Yes, seeing it on Gnome 2.14.3 / Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS.
hey guys, this is intentional. part of the new theme refresh. We might put back the blank space so it's not staggered but I didn't like wasting the blank space.

...how about a graphical status column for these icons, instead, then? with the thread outline graphics, the current appearance is a bit weird, and I think thread outlines running into a blank space before the subject would be as well...

(In reply to comment #3) > hey guys, this is intentional. part of the new theme refresh. This change is more than a refresh. > We might put back the blank space so it's not staggered but I didn't like > wasting the blank space. Apparently this has been done (I'm not sure where the patch is for that) resulting in the problem described at bug 349212. It's true that the icon without star or arrows doesn't currently add much information, altho it did distinguish between a news posting and a mail message (and could further distinguish an RSS item, if you were so inclined). Also, it used to be (in the suite, anyway) that the icon would show a difference between download status: headers only vs. entire body (useful for News and header-only POP accounts). Granted, that's sort of an expert feature (and requires twice as many icons). But you could do other nice things with that icon -- such as colorize it if the message is from someone in the Address Book, for instance. At any rate: no icon at all => staggered appearance => bad blank space instead of icon => disconnected thread lines => bad I think you should reconsider this, Scott.

(In reply to comment #6) > blank space instead of icon => disconnected thread lines => bad blank space instead of text => less space for Subject text => bad Are we forgetting about the common users who have a 1024 resolution, a 17" monitor, and possibly non-miniturized fonts? Are developers only testing at 1600 resolution? Most users need the space for the subject. Most users don't thread their view. Hmmm, how about toggling the extra space depending on whether the sorting is thraded or flat?
Not sure if this is the place, but the orange sun thing showing new emails is not clear or bright enough. Is it possible the entire folder could be colored instead? I have quite a few folders, and sometimes miss incoming emails when I don't see the orange thing. I then have to resort to checking my filter log, which is a pain. I have tried other themes, but not satisfied with any of them yet. Is the previous theme available to install again?

If horizontal space in the thread pane is really at a premium, implementing the layout requested at bug 215661 would help a lot more than eliminating 16px worth of icon.
What might not be intentional are the icons in the thread column missing for threads containing unread messages.

Mini-fix for Bug 348966 - new file "message.png". Paste in file Thunderbird\chrome\classic.jar (this file - JAR-archive, use WinRAR or WinZIP), full path for file "message.png" - _WHERE_INSTALL_THUNDERBIRD_\chrome\classic.jar\skin\classic\messenger\icons\message.png, overwrite old file "message.png".

Hi! Mini-fix for Bug 348966 - new file "message.png". Paste in file Thunderbird\chrome\classic.jar (this file - JAR-archive, use WinRAR or WinZIP), full path for file "message.png" - _WHERE_INSTALL_THUNDERBIRD_\chrome\classic.jar\skin\classic\messenger\icons\message.png, overwrite old file "message.png". Please, send me request - work this or no. Thanks.
Comment on attachment 268604 [details] Mini-fix for "threadpane message icons missing" as I mentioned before, this is part of the theme design. :)

So now there's the blank space unlike in the screenshot so the subjects don't get staggered randomly, but the thread lines point into nothing, so it still looks a bit odd. Perhaps a very muted sort of gray msg icon would work? Or changing (how?) the way the lines are drawn?
