The default colour when adding a new tag shows as grey, but when the tag is actually created, the associated colour is black (or perhaps "no colour".)
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Edit->Preferences->Display->Tags->Add
2. Enter a name, but don't select a colour. Note colour shown is grey.
3. Tag a message with the new tag. Note that the message does not get a grey highlight.
Expected Results:
The UI should be clearer that black or no-colour is the default.

This is a general issue with the color picker in Preferences; see bug 341074.
I'll leave this open as a Thunderbird bug, but the fix is probably Core.

I disagree.
I think that the color is "show as" grey because the label where the color is show is transparent and the button has a grey backcolor.
It's seems that behaves right for me and this issue can close as Invalid.

I think there are better means to convey "no color selected" than to set the button color to transparent, e.g. a crossed-through button. This symbol could be used in the color picker to select "no color" (which is currently impossible).

Aureliano, it does not behave right.
Color picker should show black as
- it behaves as if you select black
- user does not know that default color is black.
Currently, there are no "colorless" tags, see bug #648515.
