I would like too be able to use an external text editor within Thunderbird to compose mail.

Specifically, if i could use Microsoft Word inside t-bird the way I use it inside MS Outlook, I would happily ditch Outlook for Thunderbird.

MS Word has all my handy-dandy macros, like the ones I use to correct capitalization.
