User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0

Downloaded Lightning 0.3 from http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/lightning/download.html but got the following message in an Add-ons window during the install process: "Lightning 0.3 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox". Am running Windows XP SP2, Firefox 2.0, and Thunderbird version 1.5.0.7 (20060909).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download Lightning from www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/lightning/download.html
2. Click Install Now
3.

Actual Results:
Add-ons Window reads Installing... followed by a pop-up saying:
"Lightning 0.3 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox"

Expected Results:
Lightning should have installed.
Please read the release notes, especially http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/releases/lightning0.3.html#downloadandinstall

As with any Thunderbird extension, it has to be downloaded before it can be installed into Thunderbird.

we are aware of this usability problem, but there is nothing we can do about it on our end.

I've experienced (and continue to experience -- using Windows XP SP2, Firefox 2.0, and Thunderbird version 1.5.0.8) the very same bug, and your reply, sipaq, perhaps missed some of the pertinent facts. The reporter and I have both, definitively, *downloaded* the extension. Failure to carry out this step, as we naturally would "with any Thunderbird extension," has not been the problem. The problem occurs when attempting to _install_ the previously-downloaded .XPI. At that time, without fail, the error dialog presents itself: "Lightning 0.3 is incompatible w/Firefox". I can't see how this would be viewed as anything short of a catastrophic failure on the part of the extension. Why exactly is "nobody working on it", as is noted in the Assigned To section above?

That message is exactly correct. Lightning _is_ incompatible with firefox. Somehow, you are trying to install the extension in firefox instead of in thunderbird.

Everyone is consistently mis-apprehending that we are attempting to install this extension from within Firefox. We are not (at least I am not). The quoted error message presents itself when attempting to install the extension within THUNDERBIRD. This makes the error message all the more inscrutable. Again: how can this not be viewed as a serious problem, when the extension, installed exactly as recommended, to application in question, will not execute?

The bug reporter tried to install in Firefox as you can see from reading the Steps to Reproduce. To install in Thunderbird follow the steps from http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/releases/lightning0.3.html#downloadandinstall
*** Bug 360469 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I filed a duplicate report on this and granted I didn't do the install correctly but if there is a button that says "install now", it should work or the button should be removed. I suspect that there are quite a number of people who have had this issue and said, "Skip it" and moved on.

This is a bug and understand that there is nothing that can be done on your end, but reclassified as 'website' bug under the component field.
