In the "Viewing Messages" pref panel, there's a group "For incoming msgs". Similarly, in the "Composing Messages" pref panel, there's a group "For outgoing messages". That's pointless, of course. Either find a better header (may need reorganization of the panel contents) or remove the group.
The Pref panels for Mail have been reorganized. This bug will no longer be valid. In the process of trying to get this spec posted on Mozilla.

Jen, is it, what we see in the current nightly builds (viewing and composing msgs) or something in addition to that?
Actually, a bunch of proposed changes have been outlined. Current builds would need a bit of renaming and reorganizing of items. I have a request into phil and selmer to get this spec reviewed and posted. Hopefully it will be soon.
We have covered the proposed rearrangement for prefs panels in several recent bugs. I'm going to mark this duplicate of one of them. ref bug #38073 and bug #38092. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 38092 ***

The dup bug have (nearly all) been marked fixed, but this problem remains. REOPENing.

Scott Putterman will be posting the spec for me, hopefully today. Once Prefs match the spec, this bug is invalid.

Jen, if the spec contains this bug, it is bogus. These topics (the viewing group has been removed, but the text is still there) are not only redundant, but also irritating. I usually don't create a folder "INBOX" inside "INBOX" either.

In the spec, "Viewing Messages" pref panel is changed to "Message Display" and there no longer is a group "For incoming msgs". "Composing Messages" pref panel is changed to "Message Composition", and there is no longer a group "For outgoing messages".

Jen, in <http://www.mozilla.org/mailnews/specs/prefs/Preferences2.html>, there is a header "When viewing plain text messages:" within "Message Display|Plain Text Messages" and a group "Composing Messages" within "Message Composition". My build matches this spec exactly. Please remove the header "When viewing plain text messages:" and rename the group "Composing Messages".

Message Display: I understand why you want "When viewing plain text messages" removed. It is not necessary. Simone, you agree? Message Composition: I'm not sure what you want changed here and why. Our tech pubs person chose the title "Message Composition" to match the noun-verb tense of the other Preference names.

I strongly disagree that any changes should be made to the wording in the Message Composition prefs panel as it appears in the spec! This wording was agreed upon by the writing team and is designed the way it's designed for a specific reason.

Jen, same reason, also not necessary. The panel title "Message Composition" and the group, i.e. subpart, title Composing Messages" have a nearly identical meaning. The group title should distinguish the group from the others. "Composing essages" applies to all prefs in the panel, so it is wrong. If you can't find a title that describes the prefs within the group and *only* them, this shows that the prefs in this group have nothing in common and should not be grouped at all. So, in this case, you should remove the group altogether and just leave the checkboxes "alone".

Simone, could you share this "specific reason", please?

My error, I was referring to the Message Display pref panel, not the Message Composition pref panel. I will review the Message Composition pref panel and work with Jennifer on the wording in that panel

Now, two years later, the remaining issue of this bug seems to be that the "Composition" preferences panel has a "Composing Messages" groupbox, which - as Ben Bucksch thinks - adds no information. However, the current spec is at http://www.mozilla.org/mailnews/specs/prefs/Preferences.html#Compose and shows a "Forwarding and Replying to Messages" and a "Composing Messages" groupbox - exactly as Mozilla has it. I don't know how this looked years ago, but since those two things are different (replying/composition (the latter also from scratch)), they should be in different groupboxes and their title also sounds adequate to me. Ben, can you check if the current wording still is a problem ('Severity: normal') for you?

I strongly suggest closing this bug as fixed. The wording macthes the spec, and it makes sense. The second group in composition, is about "Composing messages".

Ben does not respond, but this truly seems not to be a problem anymore. Fixed at some point of time. -> WFM
