I noticed that similar panes to this on Vista (at least Explorer's) don't display text boxes until you select an item. I think doing something like that cleans up the info pane quite a bit. Makes it feel less cluttered. Attached is a screenshot from a working mockup. Is it way to late to even propose something like that?
