User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_5_3; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Safari/525.20 Build Identifier: Firefox 3.0 This version does not seem capable of playing streaming WMV files off sites. The 3.0 version and the most recent 2nd version of firefox experiences the same problem. The flip 4 mac codecs were installed and unrecognized by either released version upon refresh. Safari has no trouble accessing the site or playing it. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Open firefox to website http://english.aliant.net/asx/CHNS.asx (or any other windows streaming file format site) 2. attempt to load the "additional plugins required" do the "manual install" and re-open the original page you were on. 3. Should still show up saying "additional plugins required" even though they shouldn't be. 4. Opening the same window in safari is no problem. Actual Results: Nothing, firefox continued to be unable to open the WMV link. Expected Results: Opened the link with the proper codecs manually installed. OS used most recent version of mac OS X leopard.
confirming using Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1a1pre) Gecko/2008060202 Minefield/3.1a1pre. I have Flip4Mac Windows Media Plugin 2.2. In Firefox the site in question just says "Stopped" and it plays fine using Safari.

(In reply to comment #0) > The flip 4 mac codecs were installed Do these get installed when you install Flip4Mac, or does this need to be done separately?
(Following up comment #2) Marshall has written me to say that (in effect) the "flip 4 mac codecs" just is the Flip4Mac plugin. They're/it's not installed separately.
Interestingly, this bug's URL (http://english.aliant.net/asx/CHNS.asx) seems to work fine in Firefox 2.0.0.14. What do you see, Marcia? (By the way, all my tests to date have been on OS X 10.5.3.)
And it also "works" (sort-of) in Firefox 3 RC 1! The problem is that the plugin (as loaded by http://english.aliant.net/asx/CHNS.asx) doesn't get properly displayed (in fact it's completely invisible). But if you click where the Play button should be, the streaming content does start being played. This makes me suspect this is a (Mac-specific) Core : Plugins bug, possibly related to bug 436301. Note that the plugin (when it does display correctly) is only a very narrow strip at the top of the page. And note that bug 436301 concerns mouse events not getting to a narrow strip at the bottom of a Flash plugin -- not the same (of course), but both seem to hint at similar underlying problems.

Summary: OS X Version of Firefox cannot open streaming windows media player sources from the web even with proper microsoft codecs installed (flip4mac). → Flip4Mac plugin not displayed if only narrow strip at top of page
Using Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008053008 Firefox/3.0 and the URL in question I see that the content does play, but the plugin is not rendering on the page. Using Firefox 2.0.0.14 I do see the player and the content plays fine. It is interesting that Safari shows the plugin at the bottom of the page, while FF shows it at the top. I am also running 10.5.3.
Flags: wanted1.9.0.x?
Two notes: 1. when viewing the URL with FX 2.0.0.14, I see 2 (two) movie controllers. One placed at the top of the window (but visible, contrary to Minefield), another one over the toolbar. 2. Camino 1.6.1 displays/behave the same as Camino 2.0a1pre and Minefield (3.1a1pre). --- I'm using a patched version of the F4M plugin, patched for Camino bug 343499 comment 42. Although I don't see any difference in behaviour in this case on a machine with an unpatched F4M. I wonder if this bug is just another incarnation of that Camino bug (which is actually a F4M bug). When I click near the top of the window – in Minefield, I see very similar painting issues as are typical for bug 343499: only one button is visible, when clicked upon/focussed.
Doesn't really meet the "wanted" criteria (security, stability, regression from maintenance release) for 1.9.0.x. However, we'll look at a reviewed and baked patch.

Re-nominating for blocking. Josh, what was the rational for minusing this? It'd be beneficial to note that in a bug when you minus it...
Flags: blocking1.9.1- → blocking1.9.1?
Josh, I'll let you decide what to do here.

From the descriptions in this bug and the dupes it seems likely to be a plugin bug (the browser is unaware of control strip vs. content in the plugin and event handling works fine). If it is our bug we can software update a fix, blocking1.9.1-. I'll get in touch with Flip4Mac about this.

Hello, I'm a Flip4Mac engineer at Telestream but I have been working on other products for most of 2008. I went to http://english.aliant.net/asx/CHNS.asx using FF 3.0.4 on Leopard and got an audio-only movie that seems to display ok, and is centered vertically in the middle of the window. The controller is stretched among the whole width of the window. I don't see two controllers like someone mentioned earlier (just one) but I did notice the background color needs work. My background color is set to yellow but is only yellow for a portion of the top window (switch to another app and back again will cause a redraw to fix it). I'll make a JIRA entry and ask our QA people to check it out too. -greg-

I don't see two controllers like someone mentioned earlier (just Greg, I don't know if this is related directly to this bug but when you have a real wmv movie you will also see the control bar in the middle of the screen and stretched to the whole width. The video gets initially displayed in the lower left corner and will jump in the middle of the screen later while leaving artefacts at the left side. Should this be filed as a separate bug?
Bug 459586 has the best test case for this bug: http://www.highway57.co.uk/tests/WozTest
(In reply to comment #18) > Bug 459586 has the best test case for this bug: > > http://www.highway57.co.uk/tests/WozTest With this testcase the controls are only hidden. You can show them by clicking right beyond the movie area and holding down the mouse button. They will hide again when releasing the button.
