I want to officially register a Asturian localization team, that will localize

marcos.alvarez.costales@gmail.com. I'm currently helping on Softastur (http://wiki.softastur.org/Portada), an asociation for asturian translation in Launchpad (https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+lang/ast), and our languagecode-NATIONCODE is ast-ES.
We have translated Firefox 3.0 in Launchpad, and we will upload it to official Mozilla repositories when we can :)

Moving this over into the Registration component, as that's the only place we look for registration requests.

The document that Toni referenced in comment 2 is sadly out of date. There is documentation on the process on https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Localization_Process, and there is documentation to create a new localization on https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Creating_en-X-dude, though that hasn't been updated to the new build features for Firefox 3.1.

https://developer.mozilla.org/en/L10n_on_Mercurial has documentation on how we use Mercurial for our sources right now.

As for Asturian, is there any value in keeping the -ES region code? I doubt that, and we in general try to drop it if possible.

Another interesting thing to look in to would be to search for old Mozilla versions in Asturian on http://www-archive.mozilla.org/projects/l10n/mlp_status.html, there are probably still a good deal of strings in our codebase today that can be used from back then.

I am very sorry for the difficulty of creating and importing the translations we have made in Launcphad.
I believe that the import should be easier to import upstream, and not full of obstacles :( I'm only collaborate with Firefox ;)

Hi marquinos,  Just trying to see exactly what you are referring to.  There are a few things you may want to consider when creating a new localization.  Have you checked out the helpful documentation?  See my blog post here:

Also, if you'd like to use a tool to translate, there are a few you can consider.  We encourage people to look at either Narro, Pootle, or even Mozilla translator.  Please feel free to look at those tools to see if they can help you with your translation.  If so, we can help introduce you to those contributors who maintain the tools and they can help set you up.

We have Firefox translated into asturian in launchpad from 2 years ago. You can see here: https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+lang/ast (Search "Firefox" package).

We have the xpi file in Ubuntu, here is the steps:

The problem isn't translate Firefox or try the translations. The translations are perfect.
Us problem is the upstream proccess. It's a complicate and convoluted proccess (an old and new wiki, not clear steps...).

If you can help us, please, can you write a clear steps for the upload?

I guess we should try to fetch xulrunner and firefox-3.5 Asturian components from Launchpad. I don't know if this could be imported into Narro? So that, later on, this could become a language pack. I CC Alex Sasz.

as marquinos said, we have tried to relaunch the project for asturian language, but everything is a little confusing..... 

Exist an old version made by xspuente, but he left the project some years ago ( https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=263726 ) We don't have any proble in translate the neccessary templates for Firefox/Xulrunner again (In Launchpad they are only 6.000 strings, and this work can be done in 2 weeks. The problem is: 

-which is the current situation of the Asturian language in Mozilla
-which is the next step, (if any), before begin to translate
-where it must be translated (what link)

I don't think launchpad is a good place to translate Mozilla projects, you'll
need to provide translations for matching revisions from Mozilla's versioning
system and I don't think you have in launchpad a separate project for each
Mozilla product release, but for each Ubuntu version. Please correct me if I'm
wrong.

The language pack is the result of the build process, the translation files are
in different file hierarchy before the build process. Ubuntu works on the
language pack structure afaik.

So IMHO you have a few options:
- build a fancy script that tries to convert the language pack in a proper file
hierarchy that is supposed to be used by Mozilla (others have tried, you can't
do this perfectly, it's just not the right way)
- use a different method to translate Mozilla projects, either the web
application located at https://l10n.mozilla.org/narro, offline tools that
convert the formats used by Mozilla to Gettext (.po), or work directly on the
files (the hard way)

I can help you if you want to maintain your translation on
https://l10n.mozilla.org/narro which is an application I wrote and will be
improved in future.

Note that in Mozilla you translate products, not just software, so besides just
translating, you should also do qa, translate web pages, translate the support
site, translate bits of texts used for promotion, monitor this here bugzilla
for bugs on your translation, the mailing lists for the product release cycle,
and so on.

I'm just a voluntary localizer, so everything here is my view on things from
that perspective.
As far as the registration process goes, we'll need a source of Firefox 3.6 or 3.7 to review to proceed.

Regarding launchpad exports, that's not our bug, we complained to those guys for months now on other languages, without any luck.

I hear that there's a project on narro now from bug 525859, but that seems to be in its infancy so far, looking at the stats.

This looks technically right.

Before I go in and file a ton of follow up bugs, I'd like to raise the question on the locale code. In general, we're in favour of keeping the codes as short as feasible, and it seems to me that `ast` is as precise as `ast-ES` is. Is that right? Can we just go with `ast`?

In Ubuntu the locale folder & locale firefox is "ast" and the web search for "ast".

All our projects are registered and working only with "ast", ( Gnome, Kde, Ubuntu, Freedesktop, Openoffice.org, etc), so I think that it's the best option.
Cool. I guess alexxed should rename the narro project then, too?
I think it's a good idea too. I'll tell it alexxed by mail. (I think there will be no problem to do it..)
As Pike said, (in Comments 23 to 27) it's better a "ast" source file zipped.

r=me, with a few nits:

CallMethodDeniedOriginsOnlySubject in dom/chrome/security/caps.properties has a copy-n-paste oopsie at the end.
There are a few obsolete files.
We'll revert region.properties and searchplugins in browser back to the en-US values and do proper localization of those in bugs I'll file in a moment.
intl.menuitems.insertseparatorbeforeaccesskeys in toolkit/chrome/global/intl.properties shouldn't be translated.

*Staying connected*

You should also follow the Mozilla l10n newsgroup, http://www.mozilla.org/community/forums/#dev-l10n, available as mailing list, newsgroup or google group. The traffic isn't too high frequency. You'll find messages starting with [ANNOUNCE] in the subject every now and then, those are vital to read, as they include things that the l10n-drivers want you to know and attend to. There's a second group, http://www.mozilla.org/community/forums/#dev-l10n-web, where we discuss web localization issues. That's a separate group as quite a few localization teams have dedicated volunteers for that.

*Builds of Firefox*

We refer to the pre-release versions of Firefox as "builds". These are where you will continue to work and test to perfect your localization. They're coming in two variants:

- Nightlies. You find those on http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-1.9.2-l10n/. Sometimes it starts with old versions, so you wanna look at the end what's the current version, and then search for the firefox-3.6.5pre.as.win32.installer.exe, firefox-3.6.5pre.ast.linux-i686.tar.bz2, or firefox-3.6.5pre.ast.mac.dmg files for win, linux, and mac, resp. These files are good to use for daily browsing, and they'll get a small incremental update every night, bringing both the latest of the stability release as well as your landings to you and your fellow testers.

- Tinderbox builds. Those get built within a few minutes after you landed fixes in hg and pushed them to the upstream repo. Those are the right thing to quickly verify that the changes you made work in the build. These builds can be found on http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/tinderbox-builds/mozilla-1.9.2-l10n/ (note the different dir two levels up).

Please make sure that you're not regressing the fixes that I landed on top of your attachments. The high-level diff is at https://l10n-stage-sj.mozilla.org/shipping/diff?from=30f4cd5700f3&to=13f93d40e51b&repo=releases%2Fl10n-mozilla-1.9.2%2Fast. It doesn't show http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/l10n-mozilla-1.9.2/ast/rev/13f93d40e51b, where I commented out the dummy contributors again.

*Monitoring your localization now and in the future*

Now, as if that wasn't enough, there are a few places on the web that you should regularly check to see if there's stuff to do. One would be the web dashboard (you'll use that to hunt down the web pages for your Firefox release), http://l10n.mozilla.org/webdashboard/?locale=ast. The other one is called the dashboard, you can find it at https://l10n-stage-sj.mozilla.org/shipping/dashboard?locale=ast. And you and your peers should start watching the bugzilla alias for your locale, ast@localization.bugs.
