Thunderbird is constantly failing to close properly. When I close it the main window will die but the next time I try to open TB it tells me it is already running. When I check my process list TB is there and I have to end the process in order to get thunderbird open again. This happens about 8/10 times.

Hi Paul,

What other pieces of sofwatre are you running on this machine (Anti virus, anti spyware) ? This works for me on Vista. Anything in window's event log (eventvwr) when this happens ?  Could you follow https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging with components for logging set to all:5 and give us the logs ?

How long did you wait for Tb's process termination before "next try to open TB" and "to end the process(kill TB by Task Manager or command)"?
When you saw "TB's process at Task Manager" after close of TB's window, did TB's process always keep alive for very long time? If yes, what CPU utilization, real memory size, virtual memory size?

Do you use add-on or extension? Bug 456978 is an example of "unterminated TB's process" with Lightning 0.9. (See Bug 456978 Comment #1)

I should have said that I'm running the Nostalgy extension (though the same fault occurs without it), on 3.0b2. When this fault occurs, TB's process in Task Manager appears to keep running indefinitely.

does netstat show ldap_ or imap_ connections open when thunderbird is hung?
no lightning, correct?
can you reproduce with recent nightly build?

Today I installed the 'remove duplicates' add-on in TB3b2:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/4654

After the installation TB asked me to restart the appl. so I did,
but TB didn't return. Thunderbird.exe stays in memory and needs
to killed before I can restart TB.

Using: WinXP SP3 - TB3b2

1. removed add-on, restarted TB, no problems... 
2. re-installed add-on, TB restarted without problems...

strange!

I don't like closing hang bugs without a good resolution, but closing because no response from reporter.

BUT, for those of you who still see a problem, thanks for commenting and please follow up in an existing bug that matches your symptoms, or file a new bug. 

Tests to help match with the types of hangs we are currently seeing:
1. cpu usage - is it high (pegged), zero, low, or other?
2. run netstat in a dos command window - how many connections are shown to your ldap server and (if imap) to your mail server?
3. if you are running lightning extension, does the shutdown hang happen without lightning?

a few of the currently active hang bugs: bug 494014, bug 487965, bug 495551
there are other bugs which cover ldap issues.
and there are also lightning bugs. for example bug 456978 previously mentioned

including Bug 420744 Shutdown fails with 100% cpu load when auto-complete over LDAP is used
