This happens when a screen resolution (say 1024x768, which I reproduced above) is too small, not enough to fit all the buttons on the toolbar.

Bryan, thoughts? Should TB have better detection on small(er) screen resolutions?

When bug 474523 lands we'll have more space up there for smaller resolution screens.

I believe this has been fixed by bug 474523 past TB3.0 I expect that we will continue making Thunderbird work in small screen environments via add-ons like this one: http://hg.mozilla.org/users/clarkbw_gnome.org/tb4netbooks/
