Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.1) Gecko/20090715 Firefox/3.5.1
Build Identifier:
In previous versions of Thunderbird (2.0x and lower) it was possible to quit the program by pressing CONTROL+Q keystroke. This option is no longer available.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Shredder
2. Open "File" menu and look at the "exit" option.
3. There is no alternative shortcut.
The Ctrl+Q shortcut was removed from Windows per bug 329687, where it was considered an "unusual" shortcut for that platform (it was retained for Linux and Mac OSX though). While I find the lack of a "really close everything" option more annoying in Firefox, where you still may have windows hiding from sites that may have tricked pop-up blocking, I'd consider being able to close all windows related to Thunderbird with a keyboard shortcut desirable.
An alternative shortcut for Exit proposed in bug 52821 is Ctrl+Shift+Q, though this still would leave a confusing inconsistency among platforms if applied to Windows only (and confusion for Windows/Mac OSX users if changed there).

How about CONTROL+W? This seems to work for closing various windows in MS Windows.

Is Alt+F X unworkable?
Both Ctrl+W and Alt+F4 are for closing a single window only, whereas Ctrl+Q is intended to shut down the entire application (close all windows). Actually, Ctrl+W may now close a single tab in TB 3.0, I'm not sure about that.

ctrl-w works with TB (all platforms) and tabs when there is only one tab open, otherwise it closes the focused tab.

actually, FF close window is now ctrl+shift+W. and bug 52821 notes there are prompts which protect inadvertent shutdown
Summary: Missing a keystroke for exiting the program → Missing a keystroke for exiting the program in MS-Windows
Workaround (as far as i think bug 329687 is through, though):
For FF, there's the "Mac Shortcuts" addon to reinstall the functionality of Ctrl-Q and Ctrl-, .
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2463
You may use "keykonfig"-extension to intall your own Shortcuts for
- goQuitApplication()
- and perhaps openPreferences()
in Thunderbird.
I would appreciate if someone had time and expertise enough to port the "Mac Shortcuts" Extension to TB3 :)
