[hu] Choose search plug-ins for Fennec in Hungarian
You've indicated an interest in participating in the localization of mobile Firefox (aka Fennec). We want to ship Fennec with a good list of search engines for Hungarian. As the technical details of implementation are being worked on, we'd like to start the discussion about the choice of search engines. This bug is about agreeing on a set of search engines, and will not tackle the implementation (at least not yet). First, the localization team and Staś will look at the market for the locale and come up with a good set of search providers. The guidelines for making recommendations are on https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Mobile/Productization. You're welcome to suggest engines already shipped in desktop Firefox for Hungarian, if they fit well in the categories outlined on the wiki. For en-US, we currently use the following set, which may serve as an inspiration: Google, Wikipedia, Amazon, Yahoo, Twitter. Note that according to the guidelines, for some categories it may be better to leave them empty than to ship with en engine that's irrelevant or unavailable in your region. After we decided on a particular search engine, we will need to test it in Fennec. You can test on a mobile device and on the desktop (download the builds from <http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/nightly/>). Staś will help with testing on a device, too. If the service works fine, Staś will contact the owner and ask for permission, and for specifics like proper search flags. $name, we'll likely need your help to at least get the contact information if we don't have them already. We don't know the implementation details yet, so for now, please don't create patches nor land anything. We will keep you posted as we figure out the how's and when's. Thanks.
Search: Google Reference: Wikipedia (hu.wikipedia.org) E-Commerce: ??? Local: ??? Social: Twitter I know it is not a big help, but I'll ask around and get back to this bug soon.
E-commerce: argep.hu - this is a price comparison site but its historical price chart feature makes it unique. Contact email: firstname.lastname@example.org Local search: N/A Instead of non-existing local search I recommend http://est.hu/ which is search engine for concerts/exhibitions/performances/movie programme/etc.
Here's a patch resetting the mobile/searchplugins/ directory to a minimal set of search engines that we would like to ship your locale with. Please read this comment carefully before you land this patch. *Important*: There has been a change to how we use the <Description/> elements present in the plug-ins (see bug 528655 and bug 529869). We want to emphasize that the search is integrated with the browser to better reflect what a search plugin is and what it does. You will need to edit the Wikipedia plug-in before you commit this patch. Please read <https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Integrated_Search_Instructions> for detailed instructions. For Google and Twitter, we don't have to copy the XML files to your mobile/searchplugins/ directory. Plugins identical to en-US are pulled from source automatically. It's enough to put the engine's name in list.txt for this to work (which I did). I also updated the Wikipedia plug-in to use a bigger icon, see bug 517997 for details. Please edit the Wikipedia plug-in and commit this patch before you opt-in in the mozilla.dev.l10n newsgroup. Opt-ins without this patch will not be taken. This does not mean that we don't want to include other search engines. On the contrary, the work and the discussion will continue in this bug until we choose a good set of search engines for your locale. Then, you will be able to opt in again, so that in the final release we include more search engines than the mineral set from this patch. This patch is simply meant to reset your mobile/searchplugins directory so that we keep the repository clean and happy. Thanks for understanding!
Is this still actual?
Karen, Here's the current search plugin list for Hungarian (http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/l10n/mozilla-aurora/hu/file/6b56f5683abd/mobile/searchplugins). Once Kami and Kalman confirm them, could you take a look and sign off on them please? Kami & Kalman, It looks like there's a note here that there was some issue with the migration from central to aurora. Could you double check the list of search engines here and confirm that these are what you would like to have shipped? Thanks everyone :-)
imho, it should be aligned with Desktop version. i would remove polymeta.
Wow - this is an old bug ;-) Looking at the list, I do have some questions (please bear with me!). 1. What is the list of desktop search providers? 2. the 'list.txt' file is not reflective of the list contained in the link in comment 5. Can you explain to me the difference? Or if it's simpler, what is the proposed list that a user would see on Firefox for Android running the hu locale (just so I'm clear)? I will have different questions depending on how the above is answered :) Thanks!

Milos, can you look into this please and update it with the list.txt from Hungarian Firefox desktop? Karen, the list of search engines for desktop are found here: http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/l10n/mozilla-aurora/hu/file/6b56f5683abd/browser/searchplugins/list.txt
Hi Folks, I reviewed my latest checkouts from beta, aurora, central, and I found all of them have same searchplugins. I checked out before last switch. I think we should check the mobile version, align with desktop version, and provide mobile optimized searches if possible. jbeatty: The list (http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/l10n/mozilla-aurora/hu/file/6b56f5683abd/browser/searchplugins/list.txt) about desktop search looks okay. I will check if we can optimize link for mobile via providing mobile links directly. Thanks!

I will > check if we can optimize link for mobile via providing mobile links directly. > > Thanks! Cool. thank you for looking into this Kami. The only thing I would ask that you keep in mind is that the number of available plugins for mobile is less than the number for desktop. That being the case, you'll likely need to create a new list.txt for mobile based on what you have for desktop, but minus one search engine (https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Mobile/Productization).
btw, do we have any numbers about the search plugin usage by locale? we could be smart, but numbers can tell what users are doing
I think we may select all of search engine based on guideline: * Global general search -> google(.hu) * Reference search -> hu.m.wikipedia.org (the have a special mobile page) * E-commerce search -> I am unsure here We offer Hungarian e-bay here on desktop, however if we want to follow the guide: " Both to shop online and to consult product information. Stores are preferred over auctions. " we should select site like argep.hu, arukereso.hu, olcsobbat.hu. They are collecting shop informations from many on-line shops. Easy to compare prices, or get more info from an item. Social search -> English version offers twitter here, we can do so. (argep.hu hasn't got mobile version.) * 1 extra search engine: reference (a dictionary or a word reference recommended) -> English-Hungarian dictionary -> szotar.sztaki.hu [It seems the dictionary search plug-in a bit outdated, currently we should refresh it] Should we search on the local site/mobile directly? For example Wikipedia has direct mobile access (but we aren't using it in English version of Fennec).
Also we can consider the vatera.hu for e-commerce search too.
* Using standard twitter and google search * Using mobile version of Hungarian Wikipedia (probably we should change to mobile version in the original English search) * Using updated English-Hungarian dictionary from SZTAKI dictionary * I left vatera as is (we should consider other sites here)
Updated version, I reviewed all plugin, corrected character set eBay search still not working directly probably we may change to one of: argep olcsobbat arukereso KAMI
Does anyone know if we have a commercial agreement to use sztaki or vatera (or even the ebay alternatives)? Thanks, Karen
I think we don't have any agreement. I think we can try it for vatera and ebay alternatives. What is the official way?
for our mainstream ones, we do have agreements in place. I am already asking what the official stance is from our BD team (whether we need to have agreements or not in order to display them in the list). I'll let you know what I find out as soon as I receive word (they are on holiday today in the USA)
As for numbers, we may take a look at http://www.webaudit.hu/ - vatera (allegroup.hu) is quite at the top of the charts. I have not found the other e-commerce sites there yet: Olcsobbat.hu should be under Sanoma (based on the page source), but it's not present in the stats. Argep is not audited. Arukereso is but I don't see it near the top of the list.
We can stay with vatera, however the documentation is preferring shop over auction. That is why I offered others. We may change it later if required.
Stance from BD is that provided someone on our side has reached out to these providers to ensure they are aware of our intent, no commercial agreement is needed for these local search providers. Therefore once you have settled on the most appropriate list for Hungarian, ensured that they know of our intentions, I'm happy with your recommendation.

Hi Kami, If you've finalized your list in the attachment, let's move on to reaching out to these providers, as Karen has mentioned. Have you made an attempt to email them to notify them of our plans? Thanks, Jeff
Answer from Vatera: „ köszönjük megkeresését, természetesen hozzájárulunk, hogy a shop/aukció kategóriában a Vatera megjelenjen.” - So they are happy to appear in shop/auction category in Fennec.
They also mentioned that they have mobile page at m.vatera.hu. I will try to integrate Vatera this way.
Comment on attachment 761387 [details] Updated search engine hun mobile v3 As with the desktop patch, please convert this to a real patch for review. hg diff -u should work, though you'll need to `hg add mobile/searchplugins/asd.xml` for the new files first.

Comment on attachment 761683 [details] [diff] [review] Updated search engine hun mobile v5 Review of attachment 761683 [details] [diff] [review]: ----------------------------------------------------------------- This is OK for the most part, but we stopped hard-coding the mobile site for mobile, so that tablet gets the desktop version. That was bug 825821. Forgot to mention that on the previous patch, sorry. Can you fix that and attach a new patch once more?
