User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X 10.4; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091201 Firefox/3.5.6 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X 10.4; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091204 Thunderbird/3.0 I filter my emails into various folders/subfolders depending on mailing lists, sender etc. While I get the notification sound for incoming email, if the mail does not stay in the actual Inbox, but is filtered into another folder, the new mail icon/count in the doc does not show up....meaning, If I am out of the room and don't hear the incoming chime, that I may not know new mail has come in because the icon in the doc is not reflecting it. In Thunderbird 2, it hopped up and down no matter which folder it went into. Also, new mail count number in icon only reflects mail in the inbox and not the subfolders. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: N/A just happens Actual Results: 1.if mail comes in and is not filtered, the icon shows up in the doc with number count 2. if mail is filtered into a subfolder of Inbox, the icon does not show up and the new mail count does not reflect anything in the subfolders. Expected Results: Visual mail notification should reflect all email filtered into subfolders (with the exception of junk or trash). am using default theme...no addons.

rkent would this be caused by the same issue that causes : bug 531244 ?
I spent some time yesterday looking at notification issues connected with bug 378582 which is closely related to this bug. I went away with my usual conclusion, that this area is badly in need of refactoring and reorganization (which is bug 507638) and anything that I might do has a high risk of breaking something unexpected. There is at least some evidence in the code that only notifying on inbox messages was at one point by design, but this bug and others argue against that (and I tend to agree). It is also hard to know how to organize all of these bug reports. A likely path forward would be to write some unit tests that encompass all of the expectations of new message management, and bugs such as this would be useful input into the expectations of how it should work. If I was committed to fixing the issues in this area (which I am not as of the moment by the way) then what I would like would be to set all related bugs, such as this one and bug 378582, as blocked by the refactor bug 507638. That would provide a way to link the bugs without resorting to a metabug, which I have never found to be useful. But I would not like to discourage someone who has either more courage or more smarts than I have from trying to fix a specific issue, such as the case in this bug, without doing the entire refactoring.
My installation is also afflicted by this err FEATURE... I want to see all unreads.
Reporter, do you still see this problem when using a current version of thunderbird? And if you do not, please close bug report by changing resolution to worksforme

I still get the error with the newest PPC version. I only get the red incoming mail symbol on the icon in the doc if the mail comes into the main inbox and NOT if it is filtered into a subfolder. I do get the sound notification and sort of the growl notification. However, the Growl Notification will usually name whatever is new in the main inbox and then say and X others.....so even if a new mail comes in, it will look at what is unread in the mailbox, even if it is not the newest, and say new mail from so and so and X others.
I can still reproduce in TB 10.0.
Also can still reproduce this with TB 10.0. I noticed that it seems to only affect my other Gmail folders though and not a local folder I have. The local folder shows the number of new mails and turns the font-face to bold when an email arrives (they do so via a TB filter). The Gmail folders still have the same problem (they get sorted via an external program: imapfilter). Thought this might be useful. BTW: I'm running on linux (not PPC): opensuse 12.1/tumbleweed

New mail count in TB icon is almost always wrong. Shows some number that seems almost random and shows a number even when all messages read.

Severity: normal → S3
