Does the problem go away if you only enable directwrite and not direct2d?
Blocks: d2d
What video card do you have? What version of drivers do you have installed? What resolution are you running? I'm asking this because your fonts look so nice compared to what I am seeing. I have an ATI 5870 with the latest 10.2 Catalyst drivers.
Musawir, any thoughts on this issue?

Those screenshots are from my GTX 275.

I have an ATI 5870 with the latest 10.2 > Catalyst drivers. the ATI 5 series has its own set of issues with Anisotropic Filtering, resulting in a distance dead zone (Blur) on AF quality tests.
http://i.imgur.com/i8INt.png is what I see here with my ATI 5870 and a resolution of 1920x1280.
open up CCC and set Anisotropic Filtering to Off. That looks near exactly like my image with AF On.
Okay, AF is set off in this shot, no other changes. http://i.imgur.com/Q7L9T.png
Yep, that's much sharper :) I believe Anti aliasing may work on aliased fonts as well, but I haven't, but I haven't found a decent test case for it.

No longer blocks: d2d
Shouldn't this block Fx4, because drivers have enabled AF by default ?
Which drivers force AF per default?
none that i know of, but nvidia's AF no longer affects directwrite fonts.
(In reply to comment #13) > Which drivers force AF per default? Not force, but they have AF enabled by default, Intel drivers too... AMD have probably the same (In reply to comment #14) > none that i know of, but nvidia's AF no longer affects directwrite fonts. nope, It still affects like I said in bug #590342 Win7 64bit with newest 266.44 drivers. Use hardware acceleration when available = DISABLED http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/829/offv.png Use hardware acceleration when available = ENABLED with anisotropic filtering set to OFF http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/6909/onanizooff.png Use hardware acceleration when available = ENABLED with anisotropic filtering set to x2 http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/2374/onanizo2x.png Use hardware acceleration when available = ENABLED with anisotropic filtering set to x16 http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/5602/onanizo16x.png
you're on windows vista it seems, It hasn't been an issue on windows 7 for some time. you should dump vista, wddm 1.0 has resource contention and probably unresolvable direct2d issues.
No Vista... I'm on Windows 7 64bit like I said before ;) (In reply to comment #15) > Win7 64bit with newest 266.44 drivers.
did you install the directx / directwrite performance hotfix? have you had ie9 beta installed? what card do you have? is it directx9 or 10/11?
(In reply to comment #18) > did you install the directx / directwrite performance hotfix? I have installed all latest updates from Windows Update and I have installed manually DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtimes 9.29.1962 Redistributable (June 2010) due to MPC-HC use some components from it, also games etc... on Windows 7 64bit with latest nightly nVidia drivers 266.44 If you know link to this hotfix let me know I will install it, but probably it's already installed from WU or Dx (In reply to comment #18) > have you had ie9 beta installed? I don't have (and don't want to) IE9 beta installed and IE isn't "installed"/enabled either, because I don't use other browser except Firefox Also why would I install it ? Firefox should be working regardless of IE installed or not... (In reply to comment #19) > (In reply to comment #18) > If you know link to this hotfix let me know I will install it, but probably > it's already installed from WU or Dx The hotfix is not being distributed with WU (it will be part of the upcoming SP1 for Win7 though). It is also being installed onto your system if you install IE9 PP4 or newer.
Thank for info, much better but still not perfect after installing IE9 PP7 with 3 additional hotfixes (KB2028551, KB2028560 and KB2120976), so if anyone want just install only hotfixes, should work fine without installing IE ;) Look on blurry rainbow effect "iiiiiii" with enabled HW ACC http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/729/78412687.png compared to clear and sharp fonts on disabled HW ACC http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/4817/offqy.png
I also have this problem when I turn on the HW ACC. Fonts looks blurry and not as clear as when HW ACC is turned off. This should be fixed as HW ACC is not usable with this bug in FF.
Shouldn't this bug be fixed per pushing KB2454826 update via Windows Update on 09.02.2011 ?
no, it is still applicable on some graphics drivers.
age has little to do with it.
So it will be wise to tell devs about this specific drivers here, so they can add it to banned drivers list.
Is this finally fixed or was forgotten ?
Can anyone who's seeing this see if this is also happening in IE9? I suspect there's very little we can do here except ask ATI not to force AF for us.
