User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; nl; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6 Build Identifier: Thunderbird 3.0.3 I was typing an email when it started auto saving the draft. The cursor jumped to the start of the email, instead of staying where it was (I believe this how it worked in previous releases (0.9 and 2.x), because I never experienced it). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Write an email until it auto saves 2. 3. Actual Results: cursor jumped to beginning of draft email. Expected Results: Let the cursor stay at the same position.

I just made a second email and waited for the auto save. This time I didn't experience the same thing. Not sure what was different. The contents of the second email was copy-pasted from notepad, as the first I was typing. Also the recipient of the first email had chinese characters in its name. Will try again soon, but it's getting to late now ;-)

I can confirm this issue is still present, it's quite annoying. It happens only sometimes while writing, but it is always reproducible if the autosave happens when I stop typing for a moment. (20110501 Miramar nightly: http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-aurora/rev/308693ad3772)
does this happen for *both* html and non-html type compose windows?
(In reply to comment #3) > does this happen for *both* html and non-html type compose windows? I will have to check. Unfortunately I'm on a business trip now and it will take a while before I can test it at home. In the mean time I also have a new PC (with Win7) and another release of Thunderbird installed, so I hope I can still reproduce the original behavior.
Tested it and it's doing this for both plaintext and html. But by poking at it a bit more now, I found out that it does this only when creating the draft (ie on first save), when updating an existing draft, the cursor stays correctly at the end of the message. With the above condition it's 100% reproducible.
It also reproduces even when first manual save (not autosave) of new message is done.
I see this also on 4 computers with gmail and other IMAP mail accounts. All are on Windows 7. Autosave is turned on for every 1 minute. It seems it hapends only after the first autosave. I'm now on Earlybird 13a2. And it just happened to me.

Summary: Auto saved draft makes cursor to jump to beginning. → First auto saved draft makes cursor to jump to beginning.
This bug is still happening and it's a major pain. I touchtype and frequently have business emails open for ten / twenty minutes whilst I compose them, particularly if I'm drawing together attachments to send on for artwork purposes etc. It's particularly infuriating when in the middle of typing and the caret will suddenly jump back to Line 1 Char 1 as the draft autosave completes. As of TB 16.0 this behaviour is still present (W7x64 FWIW).
never seen this. It's certainly not common given the lack of reporters. perhaps related to specific graphics board? to get to the root of the issue more details are needed.
I started this bugreport... I use a Mac Pro with original video board from Apple (ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB)
Interesting, I tried just now on my home PC (Q6600, NVidia 9800GTX+, W7x64) and it didn't do it. On the mid-2011 i5 iMac I use at work, running W7x64, it happens every single time.
As I mentioned May 5th of last year, I have a Win7 (64bit) PC in the mean time. I just checked in combination with TB 15.0.1, but I don't see this happening anymore. I don't understand the discussion about videocards. It must be either a property of the OS, the language TB is written in, or how it's programmed. Videocards are only from presenting it on your screen, but they don't decide where to display the cursor.
It is reproduced 100 % times at my Windows 7. Create message, write some text, press "Save" - and cursor jumps to the beginning of the text. It is irritating.
(In reply to tkachukvv from comment #15) > It is reproduced 100 % times at my Windows 7. Create message, write some > text, press "Save" - and cursor jumps to the beginning of the text. It is > irritating. In every message editor, and with every save - manual or auto.
Also present on MacOS and really annoying.
I am experiencing this bug on my work machine as well. I'm on version 17.0.8. The Extensions I have: Noia Fox options 2.1.1 Signature Fixer 0.3 Signature Switch 1.6.11 Test Pilot 1.3.9 I'm also on windows 8 enterprise x64
I am experiencing this issue as well, I am on Ubuntu linux 12.04 (64-bit). It may be relevant that I am using an IMAP mailbox (GMail), in that the saving of the draft is not instantaneous but takes a couple of seconds, while the message is uploaded to the IMAP mailbox's Drafts folder.

I can't belive that this bug is still present now - more than 4 years since it was reported! It's really, REALLY annoying. It seems that bug present itself when writing in HTML-enabled mode - on first autosave cursor jumps to beginning of letter.
I can confirm that this is still an issue. When a mail is auto saved the cursor always jumps to the beginning of the email, on all auto saves, not just the first one. Other than composing in HTML, my mail is saved to a Drafts folder on an IMAP server. Not sure if that accounts for why some people experience it and some not.
Hey all, I just want to point out that I experience this using Chrome (my main 80%, of the time), so maybe it's not browser specific. It occurs every time it auto-saves and it is maddening as it is quite frequently. I am on a MacBook Pro and it is a fairly recent issue that I never experienced before, (+/- a yearish) coincidentally I believe with Mavericks upgrade. That said, it does not happen at all in Firefox for me (release 35.0).

This happens to me as well. Version 31.6.0
Does this bug ever happen when in TB Safe Mode (Help > Restart with Addons disabled)?
(In reply to Thomas D. from comment #27) > Does this bug ever happen when in TB Safe Mode (Help > Restart with Addons > disabled)? My configuration: OS: Ubuntu 12.04 Gnome fallback TB: 31.8.0 from standard repositories. Locale: Italian. I made some experiments. I have a lot of email accounts, all but one (google mail) POP3. Saving a message using the appropriate menu command doesn't move cursor to the beginning of a new text when being in a POP3 account. The same action of manually saving conversely moves in a reproducible way the cursor at the beginning of a new text when using my Google (Imap) account. It's worth noting that saving into the Draft folder is a more complex operation in an Imap account (opening the remote folder, save to it, the reopen the remote folder in order to syncing it to the local draft folder). Restarting TB with add-ons disabled does solve indeed this problem: the cursor remains at the end of the text after saving it. Disabling addons disables also my Italian locale, thus I have my TB in English. This is the list of my enabled addons: CompactHeader 2.0.9 Dictionary Switcher 1.3.3.1 signed Dictionnaire français «Classique & Réforme 1990» 4.2.5 gContactSync 2.0.5 Google Calendar Tab 3.9 LookOut 1.2.13 I have 6 more addons which are permanently disabled. To my memory no differences in the mentioned behaviour when they were enabled - I.E. jump of the cursor at the beginning of text "randomly", but likely when the autosave function was started. I disabled it after these experiments, as a workaround. Let me know if you need a list of the 6 disabled addons, or you need experimenting after removing them, or anything you need. regards.
This happens to me all the time. It is extremely annoying to look up and see that what you have recently typed is at the beginning of a (long) message and completely out of context. Isn't it time to do something?
three of the six midling users I contacted responded, and report they no longer see this. So => WFM
