The newsgroup names doesn't seem to be sorted alphabeticly in the subscribe dialog. At least only so a certain extent. If you try to list the newsgroups at newsserver news.inet.tele.dk the newsgroups are not sorted correctly. I'm attaching a screenshot...

Reproduceable everywhere. Really annoying when you have to go looking through all of alt.fan to find something. Typing it in the titlebar will bring up the wrong newsgroup, too. (I suspect that fixing the sort should fix that problem too.)
Sorry, meant to say typing it in the "search" textarea will bring up the wrong newsgroup. (Not titlebar)

Verifying James H. comments & adding: Using the "Autocomplete" feature will not work properly when the newsgroups aren't sorted alphabetically. An example for the problem from James is the alt.fan tree, where one of the first newsgroups to be listed unalphabetically from my news server is "alt.fan.alyssa-milano". This newsgroup is listed after "alt.fan.zoogz-rift" - there seems to be 2 sets of NG's that are listed alphabetically, first set 1, then set 2. Note, these sets are similiar in the hostinfo.dat file, the first set is very near the top of the file, and the second set (includes the alt.fan.alyssa-milano NG), is in the middle of the file. BTW, hostinfo.dat is 533kb, 16199 NG's total. this appears to be destroying autocomplete, or at least autocomplete is relying on the sequencial format. This gives the User the impression that the newsgroup doesn't exist, which is BAD. Note - the Subscribe dialog inserts the 2 sets of alt.fan.?? properly into the alt.fan hierarchy, just not alphabetically. BTW. The Subscibe dialog doesn't remember the size that the User resizes it to in subsequent openings of the dialog, should I open a new Bug for this???
I've recently landed a lot of changes to the subscribe code. looking at Paul's last comments, this should be fixed now. (before I mark it fixed, I'll double check. note, in the subscribe dialog the feature is usually referred to as "type-down". "autocomplete" refers to address completion in a message compose window and url completion in the browser window. yes, please open a new bug on the "subscibe dialog doesn't remember the size that the User resizes it to" problem.

Just to confirm that the problem I specifically noted at 2000-11-20 01:13 is fixed in the Mozilla 2000112004 Trunk build that I am using right now (NT4 sp5). Glad that this is fixed. Seth, you're going crazy with checkins at the moment, Yippee.... (I'm about to report that bug I was asking about now)
For reference, the bug number of the Subscribe Dialog not remembering dimensions is Bug 60945
