Need to update nightly, aurora and beta with new wordmark. New wordmarks will include mozilla firefox to keep the brand consistent and the channel name as part of our effort to grow the channel and mind share.

- This includes differentiating beta branding from final release (currently we do not distinguish between beta/release for branding).

- wordmarks currently being redesigned: 646896
FWIW I don't think we want to take this for beta if it requires changing the branding via repo landing or buildbot config. If it is like bug 649678 it is probably ok....but we want the changes between beta and final to be MINIMAL TO NONE. Anything differing is added risk and can invalidate testing...these are the sort of "harmless" landmines that blow at critical points in a release.

Eventually we won't even rebuild between beta and final and will merely do a default channel repack.

thanks Christian.
Yes! this is definitely one of the considerations.
We are aware of this and we understand that the update on beta is another conversation and a more complicated process but ideally that's the long term goal is a consistent branded build regardless if you are in nightly, aurora and beta.
Right, I just wanted to state a preference for the branding implementation in the bug as I doubt those specifics would have bubbled up :-)
hi christian and gavin, any updates on this one? wordmark update at least for nightly and aurora?

Following a discussion in bug 701182, providing a little more direction here. We created some new copy for the Nightly and Aurora About dialogs, so that should also be updated for Beta and GA.

Theo may be able to help us out here as he did in the other bug.

Copy for Nightly and Aurora:

$PRODUCTNAME is experimental and unstable. It automatically sends test information back to Mozilla to help make Firefox better.

Mozilla is a global community working together to keep the Web open, public and accessible to all.

Copy for Beta and GA:

$PRODUCTNAME is designed by Mozilla, a global community working together to keep the Web open, public and accessible to all.

$PRODUCTNAME should be updated per channel as follows:

Nightly -> Firefox Nightly

Aurora -> Firefox Aurora

Beta -> Firefox Beta

The wordmarks should also be updated in the Nightly, Aurora and Beta dialogs. They can be found here: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/brand/identity/wordmarks/
Thanks a LOT for all your explanations, they are very usefull for me.

I finish bug 701182, and I take care of that! :) I could probably add a patch tomorrow.

> that should also be updated for Beta and GA
Just one question (from a beginner): what exactly is "GA"? Is this the Release channel?

Ah, right. I *think* it means "general audience" (or something like that), but really it's just Final Release, the mainstream version of Firefox.

> Just one question (from a beginner): what exactly is "GA"? Is this the

GA = General Availability = release channel
Ok thanks ! I wanted to be sure.
I was just wondering about 2 things:

1)
>The wordmarks should also be updated in the Nightly, Aurora and Beta dialogs. They can be found here: >http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/brand/identity/wordmarks/

I can replace the current images but only approximately. I think it must follow some strict processes to do that. So, how did we shall do that? What's the procedure?

2)I've updated the $PRODUCTNAME for Nightly and Aurora channels without any problems, but I don't know how update it for the Beta channel. Beta channel seems to be a very special channel, and I don't know how to define a wordmark image only for beta with no changes for GA.

Thanks for helping!

Thanks for helping!
I'm putting this here 1/2 for my benefit of finding it again and 1/2 to give a concrete example...

What I was talking about in comment 1 has already happened: bug 700988. There was a fix/feature that changed behavior based on channel. It worked fine on nightly and blew up on aurora (causing the add-on manager to break, fun).

I'm not saying this change will be similar, but we need to be very, very careful when we have code react to the channel because these changes really are landmines we have little visibility into.
Thank you Christian. Changes on Beta channel should indeed be very carefully.

So, is it really needed to add this wordmark on beta channel? (http://mozcom-cdn.mozilla.net/img/covehead/firefox/brand-toolkit/download/beta-wordmark-only.png)
Maybe we can just rename the channel into "Firefox Beta" and don't add any wordmark images to beta to limit the modifications between beta and GA?

An other thing: with the new $PRODUCTNAME, AboutDialog title is now "About Firefox Nightly", "About Firefox Aurora" and "About Firefox Beta", so I think that menu item to open this window should match with this title. The current menu item is:
Help > About Nightly (For Firefox Nightly). Should I file a bug for this?
Maybe we have other things like this.

Based on previous comments, I have changed $PRODUCTNAME only for Nightly and Aurora.

I made the community strings changes in bug 701182 (patch https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=576591)

Feel free to request a review to someone else if necessary.

I just realized that Firefox wordmark has also changed for Beta and GA.

This one is bigger than current, to match with "Firefox" size on Firefox Nightly and Firefox Aurora wordmarks, but if needed, I can resize all the wordmarks to match with the current size of "Firefox".

Maybe we can remove the unreadable "r" character after "Firefox" (Also on Firefox Nightly and Firefox Aurora), or we have to keep it because of law?

Sorry, wrong size. I also removed the "r" char.

Nightly -> Firefox Nightly, and Aurora -> Firefox Aurora

You'll need to update brand.properties as well.

I post right away the patch.

PatchV3

Unfortunately we can't just add "Firefox" to aurora/nightly branding, since use of that trademark is restricted, and we need to continue having Nightly/Aurora builds use an unencumbered and unique branding by default. To fix this properly, we probably want to investigate an approach similar to the initial patches in bug 696436, which could be complicated.

The branding repackage seems to be very complicated, indeed, and may be out of my skills for now. I'll take a look, but I dont promise anything :\

What's the official decision? Add "Firefox " to aurora/nightly branding, no? Does this method allow us to add this, or we definitively don't have the rights to add it? So, with this method we could treat the case of Firefox Beta channel, I guess.

I'm not really in a position to comment on the issues around branding, and have to defer to the communications design people (Slater, Martell, et al)

Sorry to be dense here, but what exactly is the question? If it's simply do we want to add Firefox to the Aurora/Nightly logos then, from a brand perspective, the answer is absolutely yes, but a) I gather from the thread above that there are some complexities here and b) I'm still not sure what the context is.

It's just I was lost after Gavin's answer:

I was thinking that we definitely can't add "Firefox " to the Aurora/Nightly logos, but thanks for clarifying.

I'm watching attachment 569830 [details] [diff] [review], if I've understood Gavin, we should keep the current branding (Current logos, and Nightly/Aurora), and add the ability to use a new build option (--with-displayname-prefix) which replace current logos with Attachment #580975 [details] and Attachment #580976 [details], and Firefox Nightly, Firefox Aurora as displayed names. But, tell me if I'm wrong, we're not going to change brandShortName (regarding https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696436#c9).

And, we're still unable to handle the Beta channel case since this solution is to add a build option, which is in opposition with Christian's comment: no rebuild between Beta and GA. (comment 1)
I'd be glad to help here, but since the complications, I think we should find someone else, at least to start.
If at any point I can do something, I will with pleasure, but for now I can't

I'm confused here as well. According to our branding guidelines, the Nightly, Aurora and Beta wordmarks should always appear with Firefox in front of them:

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/styleguide/identity/firefox/wordmarks/

What's the reason we can't do that here? Gavin, can you clarify?

That's what we want when we (MoCo) distribute Firefox, sure. But we don't want the build output to be "Firefox Nightly" when Jimbo Dumbhacker produces his custom build with extra crashing, because that reflects poorly on "Firefox". So we need to continue having the default branding not be encumbered by the "Firefox" brand. Currently we use "Nightly" as the default branding, so we can't just simply change that branding package to include references to "Firefox".

None of this means that getting what we want is impossible, it's just more complicated than the obvious "just switch the image" solution, and so we haven't gotten around to doing it.
Thanks for the clarification, Gavin. Does that only affect Nightly, then? Can we make the change on Aurora? And if nothing else, can update them to be the correct weight of Meta?
Changing the font is trivial, we can do that in a new bug easily.

Aurora is in roughly the same situation as Nightly, because the default branding on the aurora branch is the "aurora" branding.
