if I click on the get messages button, there is no indication that it's
actually doing anything, like hitting the server or anything. in 4.x we put a
message in the status bar like "There are no messages on the server"

So I just keep clicking because I don't know if it's working or not...

a fix has been checked in for this both on trunk and branch
same for the other two bugs you filed
See also bug 69014, which highlights a further problem along these lines.
Alec is right, we should popup a window that looks similar to the window in

http://www.mozilla.org/mailnews/specs/proposals/SendingMail.html I think

something at eye level would help us out here.

I don't think we should pop up a window, just give more feedback in the status bar.

nominating this bug for nsbranch. There has been a few duplicates. When users
are using Get message feature it is very useful to have a visual feedback and
more information than currently we display. On pop accounts sometimes I see when
clicking on get msg button shows "host contacted.sending login information".
Upon no messages to download we display " There are no new messages on the
server"
But sometimes the above text does not change when you click on get msg button
and looks like it is a static text displayed in the status bar.
However I have not seen the same behavior with imap accounts.

Bug 77871 explores the idea of using the masthead as a throbber (replacement).
In the case of mail-news, the envelope masthead could cycle through a subtle and
polished animation during get-new-messages.

I think this bug highlights the usefulness of bug 77871 and represents a good
opportunity to begin its implementation. Please read the full list of comments
in that bug and the Mozillazine talkback's linked therein.

I think this is a duplicate of bug 49202.
If bug 49202 is fixed, you can see "Received n of n messages" or
"There are no new messages on the server".

Ok, so today there is a visual indication in the status bar, and if you're on
windows, it slides up an indicator saying how many new messages there are.
(that should be ported over to the other platforms mozilla runs on...)

And if there aren't any new messages it says so in the status bar.

I like all of that except for when there are not messages. Many users won't
notice that.

No messages found should be more eye catching, or this bug should be closed.

In my surveys and my Firefox mini-seminars 100% of the people in my seminars go
to Firefox and 0% go to thunderbird. This is the reason given by every single
person.

BTW, I'm defining switch as moving to and staying with. The users do try
thunderbird, but 100% are so frustrated they demand Outlook Express back.

I'm a thunderbird user, so this is not me talking. Though I do have to his the
Get messages button like 4 times before anything happeneds. Drives me insane as
well.
