Goal: Create a single magazine-style landing page where the PR team can curate content from the Mozilla universe. Opening this bug for the Q4 project, my first step is to do stakeholder interviews with the PR team (Melissa, Shannon, Valerie) and create wireframes, which will be passed over to the creative team. I'll open a separate bug for the frontend implementation and overall Wordpress streamline.
Melissa, Valarie, and Shannon, I've attached a landing page with interaction notes to this bug as a starting point for discussion. Please be generous with your feedback and requests. This is just one user-facing part of the larger content consolidation project. Notes: *Lede unit is a slideshow that you will be able to update yourself from Wordpress (can hold 1 to 3 stories) *Blog feed is automated, you won't be updating it by hand *The Featured Stories unit is a unit that you will be able to update yourself from Wordpress with content from anywhere in the Mozilla universe or outside of it if you want *Email sign-up is fixed and non-editable
Valerie, friendly ping on this! Can you review comment 1 and comment 0 and provide your thoughts, that would be excellent. For inspiration, I looked back at a few projects I've worked on, here are some links to them: http://www.washingtonian.com/index.html (the Daily Buzz is a handpicked selection of posts from 6 different blogs) http://vulture.com/ (part of the nymag entertainment section and blog network - it became it's own site earlier this year) http://www.nitrogennews.com/ (this is a site specifically for journalists to land on and get news from around the web and a single blog/aggregator) http://brooklynbased.net/

Hi Chrissie, thanks for this and sorry for the late reply. I think the wireframe looks great! Feedback and questions below - hope this makes sense :) Thanks! 5 - Blog Feed That's a great feature and will probably the central element of this page. We already have and will continue to have a lot of text content, probably fewer visiual-based content. So I thought the "Latest News" section could perhaps need more space, especially if this will pull not only posts from the main blog, but all others integrated blogs there (?). Even after the blog consolidation, I think the main challenge here is to visually guide the reader through the different kinds of news we have. So I wondered whether it would be possible to add an overline or icon to each article that comes in here, to show which category this news bit belongs to (e.g. Privacy, Security, Firefox etc). Would it then be possible for the reader to sort the news by category or would this happen through 8 - Popular Topics? Perhaps readers should also be able to subscribe to a certain feed (e.g. Security, Privacy...), instead of subscribing to the whole news feed. 4 Slideshow I really love this element, but I'm not sure if we can deliver visual-based content to go here on a regular basis. Content in this element should probably change every other day and the slideshow needs at least two key images in order to work. Happy to take this as an opportunity to add more visuals to all our content, but what would happen if we can't update this element as regularily as needed? 7 Featured Stories Although I love this element, this will probably need some internal process to be defined - e.g. who picks these stories, which focus whould they have etc. Happy to hear Melissa's thoughts on this. Alternatively, we could give this space to our blog feed or just have one "featured story" instead of three. 6 Archives & 8 Popular Topics I think those two elements should probably swap places - pointing readers to our topics will be more important that pointing them to our archives. I guess people will rather search for specific topics than for news published in a certain month. Others: - As readers here will not only be press, but also users and community, does it make sense to link to our other marketing / comms channels? Add icons for Facebook, Twitter, our press page etc? - Could we add a search function that allows searching for specific content or keywords across all news?

What would you like this feed to pull from? (main mozilla blog feed by PR? or all feeds?) If you look at the center well, "The Daily Buzz" on http://www.washingtonian.com/index.html then focus on the individual line items, you'll see that they are all coming from different blogs to a feed that aggregates the sum total of 6 different blogs. Over on http://www.washingtonian.com/blogs you can see the full feed with photos and longer excerpts. > > Even after the blog consolidation, I think the main challenge here is to > visually guide the reader through the different kinds of news we have. Popular topics would function like you see over on Bits Blog http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/ (upper right corner) Perhaps readers should also be able to subscribe to a certain feed > (e.g. Security, Privacy...), instead of subscribing to the whole news feed. Yes. We would do this with a feed management page like http://nymag.com/newyork/rss/ (but, I wouldn't make this a blocker to this project) > > 4 Slideshow > > I really love this element, but I'm not sure if we can deliver visual-based > content to go here on a regular basis. Over at http://www.washingtonian.com/index.html we updated this area weekly or less, so I wouldn't worry about *fresh* as much as relevant. >Content in this element should > probably change every other day and the slideshow needs at least two key > images in order to work. Maybe, but I wouldn't worry about *fresh* as much as relevant. >Happy to take this as an opportunity to add more > visuals to all our content, but what would happen if we can't update this > element as regularly as needed? I recommend giving it a try. If nothing else, you can use it to promote evergreen items, like DNT, Labs, Leadership. > > 7 Featured Stories > > Although I love this element, this will probably need some internal process > to be defined - e.g. who picks these stories, which focus whould they have > etc. Happy to hear Melissa's thoughts on this. My vision is that you could use this to feature stories from Mozillian's personal blogs, leadership blogs, other news sources writing about Mozilla, or hacks.mozilla.org when there's a relevant article or 3 ;-) > > > 6 Archives & 8 Popular Topics > > I think those two elements should probably swap places - pointing readers to > our topics will be more important that pointing them to our archives. Yes, but I wouldn't make it a blocker for launch. Next steps: Add your thoughts in here one more time, and then I'll do a revision of this page for us to use to open a design bug with Tara.

Not sure if, after the blog consolidation, we will also have one stream for all blogs rolled-up in there (in addition to category specific feeds for Privacy and Security etc) - if so, I think we should have a feed that includes all blogs rolled up in the main Mozilla blog. > > If you look at the center well, "The Daily Buzz" on > http://www.washingtonian.com/index.html then focus on the individual line > items, you'll see that they are all coming from different blogs to a feed > that aggregates the sum total of 6 different blogs. Would be great if we could have something similar, e.g. 1 January 2011 in Mozilla Privacy Blog | by Alex Fowler. That would definitely give some guidance. > > > > > Even after the blog consolidation, I think the main challenge here is to > > visually guide the reader through the different kinds of news we have. Okay, let's give it a try - no problem to have "relevant" content :) > > >Happy to take this as an opportunity to add more > > visuals to all our content, but what would happen if we can't update this > > element as regularly as needed? > > I recommend giving it a try. Cool, would be really great to have this if that's feasible. > > Next steps: Add your thoughts in here one more time, and then I'll do a > revision of this page for us to use to open a design bug with Tara. YAY! :)

Big thanks to Val and Chrissie. Great to see this coming together. I would add the following: - The email sign up isn't relevant to this audience and having a sign up on the press page makes it seem like a newsletter *for* press, not one for consumers. - Remove or minimize the download button for FF. The primary function for that page is conveying information, not pushing downloads.

Ping Val & Melissa, Updated this, and would like to move forward on design. Outstanding questions: *Would you like to have a "news alerts" sign-up, to push news out to a newsletter base that you could grow across the blog audience? *Added a link to a blog directory *Removed Firefox navigation, instead we'll move towards the One Mozilla theming, is there a layer of navigation you would like to add into the Press Center or elsewhere?
Thanks Chrissie, looks great! Some additional thoughts below: * 8 Archives & 9 Popular Topics: can these two elements swap places? Pointing readers to our topics will be more important that pointing them to our archives. * 10 Press Center: As readers here will not only be press, but also users and community, does it make sense to link to our other marketing / comms channels? Add icons for Facebook, Twitter, etc - or will this be in the footer? The Press Center should definitely be one link here, but not the only one. Perhaps you have an idea on how to use this space for other stuff than Press Center only? Maybe promote the blog directory more prominently here? Or adding author profiles? * 11 Email alert: great idea! Would subscribers receive the whole article in an email or just the link plus a teaser? Would this be automated or would authors need to provide an abstract of their article? Would readers be able to subscribe to all articles only or would they be able to choose by category? * I know you mentioned that implementing a search field would be complicated, but I think we should definitely keep this in mind (perhaps for phase 2) as it would add huge value! Hope that helps :) Thanks again Chrissie!
