RESOLVED WORKSFORME

People

(Reporter: jgangemi, Assigned: smichaud)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:10.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/10.0
Build ID: 20120118081945

Steps to reproduce:

currently running growl 1.3.2 with firefox NOT listed in growl's application list.

upgraded to the latest firefox 10 beta (4 i think?) and restarted firefox.

i tried an action that would cause a notification (downloaded a file).

Actual results:

no growl message appeared.

Expected results:

a growl message should have been displayed. it appears that firefox is not registering itself with growl as listed here:

http://growl.info/documentation/developer/implementing-growl.php

Can confirm no Growl registration with Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:10.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/10.0, but not sure if the patch had landed in this build yet.

Sorry, that should have read bug 691662.

Steven - could you take a look? We're starting to see more reports - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/916749.

The fix for bug 691622 is on target for FF 11.

Jae and Eugene, please test with current mozilla-central and aurora nightlies.
> The fix for bug 691622 is on target for FF 11.

That's bug 691662.
Acknowledged. I will need to switch to using the nightlies (I'm currently doing betas). Please give me a few days to confirm/disconfirm the fix.
i just 12.0a2 and 11.0a2 and neither of them worked - firefox does not appear in growl's application list.

i still don't see that file mentioned in the link above (“Growl Registration Ticket.growlRegDict”) but i'm not sure if that is how this is being implemented.
> i just 12.0a2 and 11.0a2 and neither of them worked

What, exactly, did you test? Was it nightlies? If so which ones?
i went to the nightly and aurora download pages and downloaded what ever was available as of 10:30ish this morning.

i tested both individual and neither registered with growl.

let me know if you need further details, sorry for the missing bits before. :)
Jae, can you post the Build Identifier form the "about:" page? It will look something like "Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:10.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/10.0".
Thanks, Jae. But I'm going to wait for the results of Eugene's tests before proceeding further.

Jae, you mentioned in comment #0 that you're running Growl 1.3.2. Is that also the version you're running, Eugene?
here's the one:

Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:12.0a2) Gecko/20120202 Firefox/12.0a2

i deleted the other version and will have to go fetch.
I have Growl 1.3.3. I think that's the latest.
No luck with Thunderbird 11 beta release, very frustrating to say the least.
Works with Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:12.0a1) Gecko/20120131 Firefox/12.0a1 and Growl 1.3.3. Shall I test others? Is there a regression? Jae seems to be using a later build of Firefox, but an earlier version of Growl.
I have the latest GROWL 1.3.3 and Firefox 11 build Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:11.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/11.0 ID:20120201153158 and when a download completes I get a GROWL alert, so beta does work. But no luck with Thunderbird 11 beta.
i upgraded to growl 1.3.3 and can confirm this now as well w/ the current versions linked above and also on the firefox 11 beta (the update downloaded this morning).

thanks for taking care of this, it's great that these are finally working again.
OK, seeing as it works with Growl 1.3.3, I'm not going to test the other nightlies. It breaks my extensions when moving from the beta channel. Any objections to considering this fixed?
Actually the correct resolution is WORKSFORME (or INVALID), since it (apparently) doesn't happen with current versions of FF and Growl.

Acknowledged. Thanks.
It doesn't work for me with Firefox 11 or Thunderbird 11 Final on Mac OS X 10.7.3 with Growl 1.3.3.
Both programs aren't registered.
How can I fix that?
Thanks
I can confirm that Firefox Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:11.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/11.0 DOES register correctly, but Thunderbird Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:11.0) Gecko/20120313 Thunderbird/11.0 DOES NOT register. Should re-open?
> Should re-open?

Please don't.

See bug 711822, which is Thunderbird-specific and Lion-specific, and has a workaround (bug 711822 comment #5).

Comment there if the workaround also works for you.
No joy on that workaround. My Growl is enabled to start at login. Tried both the 1.3 and 1.2.2 branches for Firefox.
Then you probably should open a new bug.

Put it in the same categories as this one and bug 711822 (Tookit and XUL widgets), and be sure to mention bug 711822 in one of your comments. Also indicate in the bug summary that it happens only in Thunderbird. If you can, also test on other versions (than Lion) of OS X, and see if your bug happens there.

Even though the workaround doesn't work for you, your bug and bug 711822 may turn out to have the same underlying cause. But we don't yet know that.

By the way, also test with current trunk nightlies of both Firefox and Thunderbird, and see if this makes any difference.
Have you already opened a new bug for that as recommended?
Added Bug 737444 -- Thunderbird 11 does not work with Growl 1.3.3 or 1.2.2f1. Firefox 11 remains RESOLVED WORKSFORME.
