Bio 465 is a DUPLICATE of this one.

This comment is a copy of bio 465 comment 1 by Patrick Cloke:

"It is necessary (only on occasion, hopefully) to block buddies. Also its a
Currently Instantbird has no UI for adding users to a block list.

Different programs do this in a variety of ways.

Some give a block list that you manually add screennames too as the only means
(or maybe that's very '90s), but ideally you should be able to do it via a
context menu I think.

Also if a buddy requests permission to add you to their buddy list you should
be able to allow, deny or deny & block."
Component: Conversation → Contacts window

It's a good idea that we should be able to block via the server/protocol and (if not possible) block in Instantbird only (i.e. just "hide" the conversation from ever appearing).

Call me old fashion but I would rather white list all buddies, basically blocking all except those I have on my list already. Any people requesting to be added would go into a cue where you can approve/disapprove them and add them to the white list at a later date. As an added future, maybe there could be a way of reporting spam message to the IM parent company.

Being an Old ICQer I get a bogus by Viagra message about once a week from a random ICQ account. Instead of popping up a new conversation window and or alerting when the message arrives port all non-white listed message to that small unobtrusive notification icon on the conversation window. Clicking on the icon will give the option to add to the white list or add to the black list and report the spam to the IM parent company.

Hi !

Yes, block / unblock buddies (or users, or messenger contacts), is in my point view be high priority to fix this ... !

Sometimes, a little (one or other) of own buddies has many spam or virus ... !
And its worry to constantly receive this ... ! :-(

In my case, with to mutch spam i had received from icq buddy, i forced to disconect icq account to prevent receive spam, until its fixed and permit to block buddies, like in pidgin ... ! :-(

Regards

This is a bug report, not a discussion forum. Please refrain from spamming this or other bugs with chatty posting or lists what you think that the "most important things to fix" are. Other people obvious have different opinions about this topic and a bugtracker is certainly not a place to discuss this.

Thank you in advance.

Moving this to chat core since it probably needs backend support for each protocol.
